ESPN[/url]"]Free agent infielder Rich Aurilia has reached preliminary agreement on a two-year deal for about $8 million with the San Francisco Giants, according to a baseball source. The contract is conditional upon Aurilia passing a physical exam this weekend.

Reds offered him arbitration, and I believe he's a Type-A free agent for some reason, so it works out well for the Reds.

Well, when you put up the following numbers you are probably going to be classified as a type-a free agent.

.300/.349/.518

23 HR

25 2B

70 RBI

He had a very good year for the Reds.

Free Agent classifications are based on the last 2 seasons. In this case, Aurilia was still not bad in '05, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

Wow, guess I didn't realize he had such a good year for the Reds. Can't say I watched all that much baseball this year with the Cubs being so crappy. :x

Edit: Aurilia was a Type-A Free Agent

So according to that Cliff Floyd is a Type-A free agent? I'm not all that keen on the compensation picks. Does that mean if we sign him we'd have to give up a 1st round pick?

Nope.

The Mets didn't offer Floyd arbitration.

Not necessarilly.

The Cubs pick is protected, since they were so crappy last year.

Top 15 picks (15 worst teams) are protected.
