Q: cgamez from DE asks:

Hi, What is the status with Justin Jones? Has he fallen off the rador? He was highly spoken of in the cubs organization, have not heard anything about him sinse he joined the twins. thanks cgamez

A:

John Manuel: He's off the radar. He's hurt a lot, his makeup is in question, he was over-rated by the Cubs when they drafted him. I think it's safe to say that the Cubs, BA and other organizations were too optimistic about a lot of the Cubs' pitchers in the early part of this decade (Jones, Brownlie, Blasko, Hagerty, Petrick, Ryu, Ben Christensen . . . ). Jones has not fulfilled his projections, and probably never will.

Jones: Injured

Brownlie: Injured

Blasko: Injured

Hagerty: Injured

Petrick: Injured

Christensen: Injured

The only one without a major injury on that list is Ryu. All those players had good stuff and put up good numbers at some point in their minor league career (except maybe Brownlie). At the time, I don't think it was a stretch to say that each of them were good pitching prospects.

Ryu did have a major injury. Missed about a year and a half, and still hasn't regained full velocity.

You sure about that? I thought he just had some elbow problems that sidelined him for part of a year a few years back

I don't think Ryu missed nearly that much time. He got moved back in the system because of the bird incident, but I don't recall him missing anywhere near a full season due to injury.

The bird incident was in 2003.

He pitched only 30 innings (11 of which were on rehab in Mesa and Boise) in 2004, primarily due to elbow soreness and a back injury. As raw said, he still hasn't gotten his velocity back from those injuries.

Blasko and Petrick both were TERRIFIC before their injuries, Petrick was on nearly everyone's Top 10 Cubs prospects list. Jones looked pretty darn good before the Twins trade, too. I don't think anyone thought much of Big Ben, he was a bust before he even got started. And were Hagerty and Brownlie EVER healthy as members of the Cubs organization? I don't see how you can overrate someone if they never merit rating in the first place.

Overall, big cop-out by BA.

Hagerty was healthy his first season with the Cubs (2002 - at Boise: 48 IP, 1.13 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 50 K/15 BB). He hurt himself during spring training the next season and had to have TJS. Obviously never been the same.

I certainly haven't lost hope with Petrick, this coming season will be huge for him.
