Because, he came in as an 8th round draft pick and I was the most excited about it at the time, and a lot of people doubt him but he has succeeded along the way so far. It's like when you have a favorite band and they're pretty obscure, and then they start to make it big - you feel like you discovered them.

Does that mean if he makes it big, you're going to start hating him because he sold out and is no longer a cool obscure band?

What can I say, I'm just liked the kid from when he was drafted, thought he'd be a real solid major leaguer for the Cubs, and I'm still hoping it happens.

I understand what you're saying.

not to mention that the Cubs' minor league system produces good position players once in a blue moon (when was the last one, really? mark grace?) so it'd be cool if he made it

It definitely would be cool if he did. But I'd trade him for better talent if somebody wanted him.

I hope not. Although I do remember that when Green Day got big, I got pissed off when I heard a DJ introduce the song "Welcome to Paradise" by saying "here's the latest song from Green Day." No it isn't you moron - it was from Kerplunk, which I had bought at least two years prior to this encounter on the radio. I felt kind of ripped off, like they stole Green Day from me. I had 'em first.

But anyhow... everyone has their favorite player on the Cubs - some like Zambrano, some like Prior, some like Lee, some like ARam, nobody likes Bynum. My favorite player on the Cubs happens to have not reached the major leagues yet, so I just want to see him play for them and play well.

yeah, I'd be sad if he was in a deal for a real good player, but I'd understand. But if the Cubs were to deal him to acquire, say, a Matt Karchner clone, then so help me God I will never root for this team again.

I didn't realize he'd reached favorite player status with you. I like having prospects, but I don't think any of the Cubs' deserve to be favorites at this point.

It would be sweet if he was able to translate his minor league success to the majors. If the Cubs got 800-850 OPS seasons out of Patterson and Pie before the current veteran core falls apart, they'd be an excellent run scoring machine.

Like I said, I guess it was because I always thought he was sort of a diamond in the rough and projected as a good leadoff hitter, something the Cubs haven't had, aside from sporadic successes like Jerome Walton. Mark Prior was my favorite player, but "player" implies that the guy will "play baseball" - and it's hard to have a favorite player who doesn't do that. I still like him, though.

Why would Patterson kill that deal? I'd take Kendrick over Patterson all day long.

Patterson is 3 months younger than Kendrick.

I can't endorse any deal in which Patterson is traded. And yes, I know Kendrick is a better prospect than him. I'm just stubborn.

I really don't get the lust over Patterson. He's far from an untouchable.

Ehh, you should check out the draft day thread back in 04. There were a few people (me included) who were pissed that the Cubs were passing on him in, like, round 6.

Sorry for the misleading title. The thought of having Zambrano, Santana, and Hill as your 3 top starters for the next 7-8 years affected my ability to come up with a title that didn't mislead other posters.

So we've established two thirds of the three-way is TruffleShuffle and Eric Patterson...

:D And I thought your strength was statistical analysis of baseball players.

I'm wondering why LAA would trade Santana and how in the world the Cubs could get involved, seeing as how they don't have much to deal.

huh... I wasn't even a member back then; I thought I was. I guess that was back when I would browse this forum but before I had become completely fed up with the ESPN boards. In any case, I've liked him since he was at Ga Tech and I started up the Eric Patterson worship thread like 10 games into last season. The way this offseason has gone, I'm pretty optimistic about him not being traded.

Well, the Angels have talked about moving Santana to a few teams and I agree the Cubs don't seem to have anything the Angels would need, but if the deal happened with the White Sox, the Cubs might have something the Sox would need. I mentioned Jones, Izturis, and young pitching in my original post as some players the Sox might want. The Sox could end up with Figgins (speed, leadoff man, CF), Jones (LF with power to help replace Crede's numbers), Izturis ( a defensive SS to solidify the infield), a young pitcher (to offset the loss of Santana), and a couple of million in salary relief (to help fill any other holes) for trading Crede and Garcia to the Angels and Santana to the Cubs. Obviously, McCarthy steps into the rotation to replace Garcia and Fields replaces Crede.
