The Cincinnati Post reports that the Royals are about to acquire Jason LaRue from the Reds for a player to be named.

The Reds are likely including a portion of the $5.2 million LaRue is due in the final year of his contract. We like this better than the idea of signing Gregg Zaun, but LaRue turns 33 in March and isn't going be a long-term solution for the Royals.

Not much about the Royals makes sense these days, but I'm willing to give Dayton Moore the "he's-not-Allard-Baird" benefit of the doubt.

They should have a window in a few years where they can be competitive. Hopefully they make something of it.

Looks uglier for the Royals now:

Royals acquired catcher Jason LaRue from the Reds for the player to be named.

Amazingly, it appears the Reds are getting out from under LaRue's $5.2 million commitment without paying any cash. We hope that at least means the Royals aren't giving up anyone significant. Either way, it's a good job by Reds GM Wayne Krivsky. We're guessing LaRue will rebound and have another year or two at his 2005 level of play, but he's not going to help the Royals contend now or in the future. The best Kansas City can hope for is that he plays well enough that they can get a superior prospect for him at the trade deadline.
