I was wondering if anyone knew if Ryan Theriot would be able to play a full season at SS next year? I saw he played two games last year at SS, but I don't know if he can do it for a full season. I think he'd be solid there if we were able to swing Izturis out of town in a package for a SP.

I don't really want Theriot starting. Super sub/util is fine, especially at his price. Otherwise I would prefer something else.

I'd prefer someone else too, but if it came down to Izturis or Theriot, I don't think it's really a debate.

Well, I wouldn't mind Theriot if we get a centerfielder (Roberts, Drew, etc), but I would rather us get a SS and play Pie.

I dont know how Theriot's range or arm are for SS... did he play much in the minors? Maybe somebody in the know will be able to say.

I know he played a decent amount in the minors, not sure exactly how much.

I don't think Theriot is a everyday player to be honest. He is more of a utility player that can give you 2-3 starts a week when needed and fill in at 2-3 positions. Sure he is a cheap player, but the Cubs can do better.

The Cubs can do better, but Theriot is better than Izturis so I would rather have him start. I would rather have someone like Lugo, but still Theriot over Izturis.

Theriot was a pretty good SS in college, but I don't think he is a ML shortstop. He'd probably be OK there for a spell, but I would still like to see what he could do at the top of the order.

I like his plate discipline and baserunning. He has shown impovement as he climbed the ladder - and I think he would be a solid contributor if he gets his shot. Plus, it would help the team financially (which is proving to be a moot point) if you could pencil him in at 2B. Doubt that is going to happen now that Derosa has been signed.

I am a Theriot fan, but mainly just want a table setter at the top of the Cubs order who can get on base and score.

he played short almost the entire time in AAA. He also played it a couple time in the majors. to me he looked like he didn't quite have the arm for it. Which is a shame because Izturis proabably needs to go.

Theriot saw time at SS in 49 games at AAA last season starting 41 times there. He played 2B in 25 games and LF in 7.

In '05, he played SS in 36 games, 86 at 2B. I can't find '04s numbers, but in '03, he played SS in 57 games, 51 at 2B. And in '02, it was a perfect split of 66 at each position.

Where you play in the minors is often dictated by the other personnel on the team, so it is tough to draw any conclusions as to Theriot's ability to play SS effectively at the big league level from those numbers.

Of course there are better choices for shortstop but Theriot isn't it.

I understand that everyone wants a player that will draw an extra walk or so each week especially given our past OBP woes, but I don't understand that nobody sees value in a player that will make a play or two a week defensively over the more offensive player. A healthy Izturus will do that over a Theriot or Cedeno.

I doubt he'll beat out ARod for the job.

That's the kind of thinking I want around here now. Let's just be the new Yankees, it sure beats being the old Cubs. Brilliant!! :D :D :D

If the only difference between Izturis and Theriot were a walk per week, you might be right.

But Izturis can't hit for average or moderate power either.... and Theriot does both.

Theriot's advantage on offense blows Izturis's on defense away.

How so? Theriot's short stint up here last year excluded, he's never shown power, ever. Izturis's career ML SLG is barely different from Theriot's career minor league SLG.

Theriot's advantage on offense has yet to be extrapolated out to an entire year in the majors. I don't think he has a chance in hell to post his minor league numbers, let alone his short superhuman stint last year.

Theriot can walk more and costs less. Those are his advantages. He doesn't hit for more power than Izturis, and avg doesn't matter if you can't do anything else to back it up.
