Pretty solid move for Cat and the Rangers.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Frank Catalanotto's three-year deal with the Rangers will be worth at least $13 million.

There's also an option for a fourth year. Catalanotto could play left field for the Rangers, but he'd be better utilized as a DH if the Rangers decide to bring back Brad Wilkerson or look for someone else to replace Carlos Lee. He'll also be a candidate to replace Gary Matthews Jr. in the leadoff spot.

Nice move by the Rangers. They let DeRosa walk and brought in a better offensive player, who's the same age, and they are paying him the same money as DeRosa would have earned.

Catalanotto has produced an OBP of .360 or better and an OPS of .815 or better in 6 of the past 7 seasons. DeRosa had a breakout year at the same age. The main difference is that Cat doesn't play 2nd anymore and DeRosa does. But if you are grooming Ian Kinsler, who cares ?

Yeah, if Cat could still play 2B, he would have been a much better signing than DeRosa. His lack of ability to play anything other than corner OF made him a non-option for the Cubs, who already lack power in the OF....or did before this afternoon.
