Hendry must have been given many blank checks. It sounds like this guy is ready to hand out money left and right. I have heard just about every name out there mentioned recently. This offseason is going to be crazy on the north side.

Well he did hand out money left and right early to crap players last year too. But of course the difference are the grandoise mention of getting 14 starters and 11 power hitting outfielders. I would say its not unlimited. At the very very very most we will stay under the lux tax, which I believe is about 140M this year. At this stage, if we do expect to get a team that can contend we are going to go over 120M unless some shrewd trades are made.

love love love love. Just give me drew and lugo and I don't care how many mediocre but dependable SP you get.

The thought of a blank check makes you think Lugo?

Yep, because it's a smart budget oriented move. Look the payroll isn't going to be unlimited. Maybe we go up to $130, who knows. But ditching Izturis and filling SS with Lugo is a very SOLID move. Top that with Drew in CF and we have a really high team OBP. Maybe I was too quick. . .

Give me Drew, Soriano, and Lugo!! Better?

MacPhail was part of the Selig group that wanted clubs to by fiscally responsible. Furthermore, Selig in his efforts to break down the union into accepting the luxury tax preached the game was in poverty. Could MacPhail's loyalty to the MLB front offices made him suppress payroll lower than he should?

Maybe with MacPhail gone, the Cubs are able to spend more?

Or maybe they are just spending the money that they aren't using to build the parking garage?

Thinking positive for second, the Cubs have freezed season ticket prices because they know that the fans are restless...at least more than usual. By freezing ticket prices and raising payroll, I think this shows that the higher ups are finally realizing that they need to pump a little more cash into this Addison street train wreck.

Sign Soriano

Sign Drew

Get Westbrook or Lee from the Indians

If not in the last one, dump Cesar and Jones for something

Sign Lugo

Sign at least one of the best pitchers still available

We still under the luxary tax?

I wish the 100th World Series anniversary was a couple years ago - maybe then we would have spent a ton of money on quality superstars, like Vlad or Beltran.

whats better than a $100 mil train wreck?

a $140 mil train wreck

seriously though, im beginning to think Hendry might actually have a plan that includes fielding a winning team for 2007

Scary isn't it? Hendry with a plan? It'd be a little like GW Bush with a plan...no wait, not that scary :)

I don't know about an unlimted bank account, but I woud say Hendry

definelty has a bottomless trash bag.

Assuming for a second that what you said actually makes sense, what the hell does it mean?

Hendry appears willing and ready to go out and pick up as much trash as possible. The first drop in the bag being DeRosa.

DeRosa isn't exactly trash. Did we ovepay? Yes.

"Trash", however, is a label best reserved for guys like Neifi Perez and Jose Macias.

OK, would you say(given his career averages) he is mediocre?

So Hendry overpaid for medoicre talent? LOL. The beat goes on

with Jimbo, the beat goes on.

Depends. If he truly has turned the corner in his career, with his new stance and approach, he's definitely not mediocre. Not with the numbers he put up last year. If it was a fluke, yes, he's mediocre.

Either way, paid too much for a guy who is at best going to put up an average Todd Walker year.

Man, are you always this negative? You ready to eat SERIOUS crow if DeRosa puts up good #'s next year?

I'm very optimistic regarding my other sports teams(check the Bears/Bulls threads.) I've simply had it with this organiztion, espcecially our garbage/inept GM.

I understand. Anyone who has groaned at my posts over the years knows I speak the truth :)

But hey---if the Cubs really have the cash to overpay for DeRosa, and he puts up mediocre numbers and sort of subs in/out with Theriot?

Eh......depending on the rest of the lineup & pitching, maybe I'll be alright with it.

He doesn't have to eat serious crow if DeRosa puts up good numbers next year.

He only has to eat crow if DeRosa puts up 13 million dollars worth of numbers over the next three years.
