Now that everyone is distracted with zito and schmidt should we go after Bonderman? I'm not sure if he is even trade bait anymore with all of the prospects the tigers just gave to the yanks but I would like to have him. I think he is a #2 in the making. The fact that he is only 23 years old is amazing to me. I like his stuff too and I think he would be really good in the N.L.

Also what was the deal with him being traded from oakland a year after they drafted him in the first round?

Jeremy Bonderman

Traded by Oakland Athletics to Detroit Tigers as part of 3-team trade (July 5, 2002) in which Detroit Tigers sent cash to Oakland Athletics; Oakland Athletics sent Carlos Pena and Franklyn German to Detroit Tigers; New York Yankees sent Ted Lilly, Jason Arnold and John-Ford Griffin to Oakland Athletics; and Detroit Tigers sent Jeff Weaver to New York Yankees

Yes, he should be available, they have still have a wealth of talented young SPs that are waiting for open spots in the rotation. 2 of the 3 pitchers they traded to the Yanks were RPs.

I would absolutely love Bonderman. He'd be better than any option available. The only downside is that you have to give up talent to get him. I don't know what they'd be looking for, but I'd give them a lot.

If Sheff can still play OF, they need a 1B. More than anything they need a power hitter with patience (esp LH). JD Drew would be a great fit there in RF with Sheff at 1B.

I think Tigers boards are talking Bonderman for Teixeira. So I don't know what we have available that would come close to that. They don't need prospects, they need guys who can contribute now. And they're not going to give away the guy that shut down the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the playoffs for a guy like Jones.

Although, they did take Neifi from us, so maybe DD is not as smart as I give him credit for.

Dunn is such an enigma to me. A guy with a career .245 ave and career .380 obp. If only he'd strike out 50 less times and keep the same number of walks, I'd feel like the Cubs should go after this guy. But he's a train wreck in left...geez.

I think the Tigers would move Bonderman, but only in the right package. They are going to want an elite hitter in return. We don't have that hitter. It would be nice if we could build a package around Jones, but the pieces aren't there to do that.

I see a few possibilities that could happen, but none are likely.

As was mentioned before, I've seen Reds fans toss around Dunn for Bonderman (or some variation with those two being the principles.) That one makes sense if one really believes that the Reds have tired of Dunn.

Another would be Bonderman going to the Orioles for Tejeda. If Guillen shifts to first, this might make sense. I'm not sure what the ramifications of Guillen's injury will be, so this one is hard to call. The Orioles likely would want more than just Bonderman if they part with Tejeda.

Another possibility, is Teixeira for Bonderman. This would make some waves and the Rangers likely would want more for their slugger. This one makes perfect sense for the Orioles, but I'd think the Rangers would be reluctant to move Tex without having something more coming back.

The Detroit Free Press has an article today that says Detroit will likely try to reach terms with Bonderman this off-season for a long term contract as opposed to trading him.

If you lowered his strikeouts you would either lower his HRs, his BBs, or most likely both.

His bat angle and approach lead to the low batting avg. and high Ks, they also lead to his high HRs and BBs.

His long arms don't help his bat speed either.

Sheffield agreed to go to Detroit because they promised he wouldn't have to play 1B.

How soon would Andrew Miller be ready for Detroit? When he is, a guy like Bonderman, Maroth, etc. becomes expendable. Of course they'll have to fill Rogers' spot here soon as well

They have Miller on the same track they put Verlander on- September call up during draft year- serious look during spring training. I don't think Miller will win a job in spring of '07, but it's because what they have is pretty good. Zumaya could also go back to a starting role, but with Todd Jones at closer, Zumaya is a couple of Todd Jones' blown saves away from being a great closer.

It's a tough call on Bonderman. He's under club control but about to get expensive. It would still take a haul to get him, in my opinion.

Just thought of this- Bonderman+Inge+minor leaguer or two for A-Rod. Tigers slide Guillen to third and put A-Rod back at short and let Miller try to win a spot. Serious hit to Tiger pitching, but a serious upgrade on offense.

1. I think Bonderman is much more than a #2. He was the Tigers best pitcher for most of the season, and he's improved every year. He's a #2 right now, he's got ace potential.

2. He was supposedly being dangled for a power hitting 1B. Lee would have been perfect, because a Bonderman + Shelton for Lee deal would give us a young, durable pitcher and a first baseman who's hit .327/.423/.531 in his minor league career. Too late for that now, and the Cubs would never trade Lee.

3. Now they would want a SS because Guillen is rumored to be moving to 1B. We don't have a good SS.

Bonderman would give us a young, improving power arm to put behind Z. It's a pipedream at best.

Crazy idea, but how about DLee and Izturis (I know he sucks but he has some weird perceived value in the GM baseball world) for Bonderman and prospects. I'd like to get Cameron Maybin, but I doubt that would happen. Maybe they'll give us Granderson? I doubt that too. Humberto Sancehz would have been good to be included if they didn't trade him for Sheff. Then try to sign Nomar to play 1b. Immediately sign Bonderman to a contract extension and sign JD Drew for CF and trade for Burrell for RF.

Not sure I want to give up Lee but we need a starter and that's one way to acquire a legit ace.

EDIT: I know there's no way this would ever happen. DLee will definitely not be traded this offseason. Just trying to think of a way to get a solid #2 starter in here.
