That game last night was scary, the 1st period was awesome, 2nd was terrible, 3rd they were able to hang on. Havlat another 3 points, Ruutu looked good -- this team's offense is really starting to impress. Now the defense (especially Cullimore, Keith, Seabrook) needs to work out it's problems.

Blackhawks win again tonight, 2-1 over the Avalanche at home. Goals came from Ruutu & Aucoin. Khabibulin made 26 saves. Sounds like another solid effort, and they're 7-1-3 in their last 11 games.

Ever since Yawney was fired and Havlat is back in the lineup the BHawks have been playing very good.

Yep, Savard is really doing wonders for this team, the system he's put in place is working and it's allowing guys like Ruutu, Havlat, Vrbata, etc. to do their thing offensively. Khabibulin is completely on his game and is also a big reason they've been playing so well lately.

Only 2 points out of that 8th playoff spot currently.

Khabi was really bad last year but this year he def has turned it up. I'm just hoping we are able to sneak into the playoffs. It's been a long time.

where was Bondra before the Hawks dusted him off? why wasn't he already with somebody?

He was with the Thrashers last year and had a decent year. I think he had something like 21 goals.

I don't really know why no team grabbed him this year. Personally, I was surprised to find out that he was still a FA when we were rumored to be signing him.

I guess 'Bulin made several great saves at the end that preserved the W for us. He has really played well so far this year. 2 points out of the 8th spot is pretty amazing. Savard has done wonders for us ever since he has been in charge.

Just got back from the game. $55 seats for free was a sweet deal. Khabi was awesome. He made some tough saves look real easy because of his positioning. Havlat is amazing. Some of the moves he made tonight were disgusting, and he made a huge play on a backcheck as did Ruutu. The defensemen played a much better game tonight. Cullimore, Kukkonen, and Wiz all blocked a ton of shots. Wisniewski got a ton of ice time, I think Savard really likes him, Arkhipov too. I didn't want to see a trade for a band-aid before, but I think if this team keeps playing like they are and they're able to pick up another top 6 forward they might be able to surprise some people in the playoffs.

My only gripe is the stupid fans who sit there and yell "hit him" and "shoot" every 2 seconds. You're going to get those "experts" at any type of sporting event though I guess.

That happens a lot at hockey games, and I think it's because so few people really understand the sport, and only a tiny fraction ever played it. I consider myself a pretty knowledgable sports fan, and I follow hockey a lot. But I would never pretend to break down the strategy on the ice.

I went to a game in Phoenix last year and the vast majority of the crowd were screaming those two phrases the whole game. You might think that's because of hockey being relatively new to AZ, but you get some of the same stuff at Rangers games in NY.

Yeah, I like to call it the "I'm an expert" phenomenon. It's apparent in every sport.

I'm not sure it's a matter of people thinking they are experts. They go to hockey games wanting to see two things, goals and big hits.

I'm talking about the guys who are screaming for guys to shoot from the corner, behind the net, and other horrible angles on the power play especially. I know they want to see goals, but they think the best way to score is to shoot as many times as you can. They don't realize they have a better chance of scoring by getting someone a lane to the net with traffic in front (like Aucoin's goal last night). Also, on the penalty kill they think the best way to get the puck is to hit the guy. That's not true either.

The Northwest division is going to make it really difficult for the Blackhawks to slip into a playoff spot. 5 teams, all with 17 wins, all between 35-37 points.

There are 4-5 teams in the rest of the conference that the Hawks have little to no chance of catching (DET, NASH, ANA, SJ, DAL). They might have to rely on 3 Northwest teams failing, just to get a shot at the 8th spot.

Good thing is, and I haven't looked at the schedules, but I'd imagine those teams play each other a lot down the stretch.

Fact is, the Hawks need to pick it up at home and against the bottom-rung teams. Over the few weeks they are at the UC and then have two here in St. Louis that they should be able to win. Take care of business and hopefully Tallon will be motivated (READ: spend some of Bill's bills) to make a few additions at the deadline.

They have a 7 game trip in February when they play 3 of those NW teams, as well as SJ and LA. Then come home for 1 and go to NYR and DET. That could be a potential make-or-break trip for their playoff hopes. They have 18 games before that trip, and really need to rack up the point totals to give themselves a cushion.

barn burner tonight. the two teams combined for only three more shots than power plays in the first. looks like they Hawks pummelled the goalie in the second, couldn't extend the lead.

holding on to this one would be gigante.

I was at this game tonight.

The Hawks outplayed the Predators for the first two periods, but the 3rd was poor. Kariya's 1st goal was a result of him cherry picking, and the Hawks, particularly Duncan Keith, didn't realize it, and he was in alone to get the goal. The 2nd goal was a result of the Hawks, for some reason, unable to capitalize on 3 chances to clear the zone during the PK. Denis Arkhipov, especially, had a good chance to clear and gave it right away. He sucks badly, BTW. Brings absolutely nothing to the table, even for a 4th liner.

Just a little sloppy tonight, and a little lazy at times. They were probably due for an off night. Just have to re-group, and be ready for the Leafs on Friday.

Preds are one of the best teams in the league. I was actually heartened to see that the Hawks really played with those guys----even dominated the play for much of the game.

Moral victories? No. But I think this team is figuring out they don't need to fear anyone when they take the ice.

Agreed. In that game against Detroit, they came out hard and easily could've won if Hasek wasn't so stellar in net. Same thing last night. They're showing they can definitely hang with the best teams in the league (and more than that, we're 3-1 against the Preds this year).

Hawks won 3-1 as they scored three unanswered to win the game. Smolinski netted a shorty in the 2nd to tie the game at 1, Bondra scored his 500th goal in the 3rd, and Seabrook added an insurance goal late in the 3rd.

With the win, the Hawks are only one point out of 8th and they play the Avalanche tomorrow, the team that is currently in 8th.

Nice win. Khabibulin, once again, strong in goal, as usual. Hawks also had to deal with some questionable officiating, as they only received 3 power plays, while Toronto had 8. Great to see Peter Bondra get Goal # 500 in his career, and he got a nice standing ovation from the fans. Also the biggest crowd of the season for the Hawks -- 17,950. Hasn't been that high in awhile.

Reminds me of the Bulls two seasons ago. Had to claw their way into a playoff spot, and finally they were 1/2 game back of Philly, and low and behold, they were playing Philly next. They demolished them and took the 8th seed away. Let's hope it happens to the Hawks tonight.
