Nationals have asked for permission to talk to Jose Oquendo.

Link.

Also yesterday, the Nationals asked permission to speak with St. Louis Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo about Washington's open managerial position, according to a source.

Here's the A's list of interviews.

Bench coach Bob Geren will interview today in Oakland, followed by infielders coach Ron Washington on Tuesday, then Japanese League manager Trey Hillman on Wednesday.

Colorado bench coach Jamie Quirk will interview Nov. 7, followed by Orel Hershiser Nov. 8. Both those will take place in Phoenix.

The A's received permission to interview Angels pitching coach Bud Black, but are working on an interview date. The A's will likely interview Black late in their process because there's just a seven-day window to hire him after the interview.

It also appears that the Padres will not ask for compensation if the Giants want to hire Bochy.

Towers said the Padres have not demanded compensation if the Giants hire Bochy. A Giants source said such a demand is unlikely at this stage.

Why would the Padres not ask for compensation? I don't see the point in not asking for something back.

Because Alderson likely wanted him gone.

Makes sense, but even if that's true, I still don't understand why you don't ask for something in return. At least ask. It's better to get a low level prospect that doesn't project to ever make the big leagues, rather than getting nothing.

My guess is that the Padres would rather not pay him the 1.9 million owed for next season and will hire a manager that won't make half of that.

If they had asked for compensation, the Giants likely move to another choice. The Padres then have Bochy for another year, which is something they may not have wanted.

Padres begin to interview candidates.

Link.

First on the docket is St. Louis Cardinals third-base coach Jose Oquendo, who will meet with Padres officials in San Diego today. Scheduled to follow Oquendo into town, Towers said, are Angels pitching coach Bud Black on Wednesday, Japanese league manager Trey Hillman on Thursday, Giants bench coach Ron Wotus on Friday and former Dodgers hitting coach Tim Wallach on Saturday.

Towers said he could request an interview with another candidate or two if the first five are found lacking.

Washington has added a relatively unheard of name into their managerial search by interviewing Trent Jewett, the Pirates' AAA manager.

Link.

The Washington Nationals have interviewed yet another candidate for their open managerial job, talking to Trent Jewett, the manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates' Class AAA affiliate, about becoming Frank Robinson's replacement.

Jewett was in town last week and met with both General Manager Jim Bowden and team president Stan Kasten. He is added to a list that includes at least two other candidates without major league managerial experience -- John Russell of the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system and Manny Acta of the New York Mets. It also is likely that there are other names under consideration that have not yet become public.
