Jacque Jones goes out and has a season that surpasses almost everyone's expectations. And what do people do on the last day of the season? Bitch about him and his contract. Give me a freaking break.

LMAO. Surpassing expectations isn't anything to tout. we EXPECTED him to royally blow. he was royally average instead. Whoopee!!!!

Only two RFers in the NL had a higher OPS than Jacque this year. He was hardly average. But that's okay, go ahead and bash him anyways.

*sigh*

Jacque isn't bad. His contract is.

And this was started by someone stating that "everyone on this board" was wrong about him. Which it's too early to tell if that's the case. That's it.

The Cubs needed a big time bat and settled for a mediocre one. That's the problem. Jacque is an okay 6th hitter. He's a nice role player on a team for which offense is not a problem. But the Cubs had big time offensive weaknesses.

And all this doesn't even take into account that OBP-wise, he's not even mediocre, he's bad.

His OBP is horrendous, and that's FAR FAR more telling than OPS (which vastly overrates slugging). You can live with (if necessary) players who have high OBP but don't slug a whole lot, but guys with poor OBP are not good not matter their slugging because they make outs far too often. OBP is far more important.

And Jacques makes far too many outs.

And on top of that, WHO CARES if he plays right, left or center? Because of the way our roster is assembled, we needed right to be a big-time hitter, not just "okay". Aside from that, you can take nearly ANY otufielder and stick them in right. If you're willing to accept Jacques' terrible arm, no one is too bad to put out there.

He is 15th out of 19 qualified MLB RFers this year on OBP. that's just bad. He ranks 45th among qualified major league outfielders. Again, that's not good. Period.

The problem with Jacque Jones isn't him falling below expectations based on what was likely expected of him, but rather how much could he improve a line-up that needed alot.

Jones exceeded my expectations, with that said, they needed an elite bat in the middle of the order and still do, IMO. That not Jones' fault but rather how the roster was constructed. Jones is stop-gap type of player, he compliments a good offense well, if there are other good parts already in place. If the Cubs had a CF'er like Beltran, Jones would be suffice in RF as I think his salary is fair for what is to be expected, I think the years were excessive, but demands were greater than supply. FTR, his EqA was .276, the avg. RF'er was .274, slightly above avg.

You can make the case for Pierre as well being in a somewhat similar situation (except the Cubs traded nice prospects). He played to expectations, but given what the Cubs needed at the top, it would not be enough, especially given the lack of a #2 hitter.

The big problem is Jones was in an outfield with Pierre and Murton, who both have way below average power for their position.

Pierre was flat-out pitiful in the first half of the season, and Cedeno was pitiful as well after April.

With all the injuries, we needed way more out of Jones.

of the known options hendry had for LF, who did any better than jones?

The only gripe we can have is the contract length. It's very possible that the contract length was what got Jones to the Cubs . . . .otherwise, we'd not even had him in LF and that could have gotten ugly.

Also, something should be mentioned (if not already) that Jones played through some pretty tough injuries.

Face it, Jones was the least of the Cubs problems. . . . he wasn't a problem in my opinion.

If I were him, there's no way I'd want to stay with the Cubs.

Jones contract is overpaid for what does but he does provide okay production in the right offense. If the Cubs add A.Jones in center field or V.Wells in a trade along with signing Soranio for 2b you can hide his bat lower in the order.
