Cedeno is AAAA. I have absolutely no fear of eating crow b/c of that statement either.

He showed absolutely no ability to adjust to ML pitching. If anything, all defenses did was shift over towards the RF line and take away all those bloop doubles he was getting down the line. It's pretty sad when something that simple nabs you of so many XBH.

Sad, but this is almost encouraging, that Hendry could possibly view it as having a chance of being really important. By saying he's not sold on it being the most important offensive stat, it implies that he knows it is important, even very important if it's in the running for most important offensive stat.

The only worry is that the other things he has in the running are runs scored, sacrifice flies, and triples.

Don't forget about speed/stolen bases.

How many rookie middle infielders put up great numbers? I'd rather take a chance on Cedeno getting better both offensively and defensively than go with a "sure thing" like Izturis.

hold on, you are really going to compare jones and ichiro...and they say jones is better..with a straight face?

first..jones is having the best year of his career and ichiro is having his first sort of off year...and ichiro is still better.

ichiro's career BA is the same as jones career OBP.

jones' great ops is right at ichiro's career OPS.

jones hits in hitter friendly wrigley and has his best year slugging...

ichiro hits is pitcher friendly safeco and still has great stats..i certainly would just hate to have his .370-375 obp at wrigley!

jones is an adequate defender but can't roll the ball to the infield from right

ichiro is a great defender with afreakin' cannon for an arm!

i have no problem with jones...but with our current outfield configuration he is asked to be a power guy and he isn't that.

basically to be a decent offense we either get rid of jones or murton, sign a power hitting cf..or sign a soriano-tejada type to add power at a non pwoer hitting position.

If Dusty Baker is removed, what are the chances of a new player philosophy as Bob Brenly alluded to in Melissa Isaacson's story? How about realizing the value of OBP? --Peter Bianco, Shanghai, China

Brenly believes the way to win is by nurturing the farm system and avoiding costly free agents, and in principle, it sounds like a good plan. But the Cubs aren't in position to follow that philosophy since Jim Hendry has two years to win or else, and there are no impact players in the system ready to come up in 2007. Hendry is not sold on OBP as the most important offensive stat, so I wouldn't expect that to change drastically either

.

(I didn't see this anywhere, and if it was, then I apologize)

This was in Sullivan's latest "Q-n-A". Notice the bold part? No wonder Baker and Hendry are a match made in heaven. So, I expect the Cubs won't be addressing the "lack of OBP" anytime soon.

We didn't need a Sullivan Q&A to tell us that Hendry completely undervalues OBP. It's been obvious from the teams he's put together.

What upside? Cedeno can't hit a lick and seemingly can't do anything but play SS. Even that he doesn't do remarkably well. Great range. Poor glovework, footwork, and throws. I'd rather have Neifi.

Yeah, I said it.

Fred, Cedeno's #'s post ASB please? :D

.233/.262/.342/.604

07/14 - 09/20 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Cedeno 193 19 45 7 1 4 66 17 6 46 0.233 0.262 0.342 0.604

Someone told me last year..... "He couldn't possibly do worse than Neifi."

Insanity. Here's one for your DB to crunch on: what players have had OBPs as low as Cedeno's and then come back to post, say, .350 or better?
