Not much to say about this game, except that it was ugly. At least the part I saw. ( I left early and missed the too little and too late rally. The best part of the game was when Matulia was stealing second. SK's catcher (Witter has a good bat, but defensively...) wound up and threw a blazing laser that hit his pitcher square in the butt and the ball ricocheted towards the first baseman. Everyone had the giggles for the next inning or so.

Renshaw was not very effective. Maybe next year when he repeats at Boise.

Clevenger and Cranzler need to improve their defense.

Maesti is the best (and only) pitcher out of Italy that I have seen. :) Actually he will do well out of the pen for Peoria next year.

KEIZER, OR – The Boise Hawks’ 2006 season came to an end Sunday in Keizer as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes beat the Hawks 6-4 and captured the Northwest League Championship in four games. Mike McBryde’s spectacular diving catch in left-center field took a game-tying double away from Steve Clevenger to end the eighth inning and thwart the Hawk’s come-back attempt. All Star closer Juan Trinidad finished the Hawks off in the ninth inning and the Volcanoes celebrated the 2006 championship.

The Hawks’ scored four times in the eighth inning in a valiant come-back attempt that came to an end in McBryd’s glove. But the season was far from a disappointment as the Hawks rebounded from a 2-8 start to win the Eastern Division Championship. Their Game 1 victory gave them hope of overcoming the pitching-rich Volcanoes, but Salem Keizer won three games in a row to win the series.

The Hawks finished with the top bating average in the league and placed three players in the top ten in individual batting. They had two post-season all stars and multiple players in the upper echelon of the league bating statistics. The season was one to be remembered for many reasons, especially the outstanding character and talent of the fine group of players sent to Boise by the Chicago Cubs.

It is quite possible several members of this season’s club will continue to make an impact in the baseball world. Boise has been privileged to have them play at Memorial Stadium this season.

The 2006 season has come to a conclusion. Professional baseball in Boise will resume in June of 2007. Stay tuned to the Hawk’s web site for all Hawks news.

according to the rumor mill, next year, Boise will be the Bombers. We'll hear and see for sure pretty soon. I'm looking forward to seeing a number of those guys in Peoria next year - I've got some serious baseball withdrawal going on right now.

Bombers would be ok, I like wierd MILB names so getting away from generic names like Cubs and Hawks for our MILB teams is good.

How about the Boise Taters? It could have a double meaning, since Idaho is known for potatoes and the Boise hitters will hopefully hit a bunch of taters next year. :D

The Idaho Statesman[/url]"]KEIZER, Ore. — The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes finished the most successful baseball season in club history Sunday night the same way they played all summer — with speed, sharp pitching, clutch hitting and excellent defense.

The Boise Hawks, meanwhile, saw their hopes of a Northwest League title disappear as Salem-Keizer center fielder Mike McBryde's leaping catch in left-center sparked the Volcanoes' 6-4 win that clinched the championship — their first since 2001. The Volcanoes won the best-of-five series 3-1.

McBryde's catch ended a Boise rally in the eighth inning that had produced four runs. With two outs and runners on first and second, Steve Clevenger hit a drive into the left-center gap. It looked like a two-run double that could have tied the game at 6-6.

"I saw it and got on my horse," McBryde said. "I got a good jump. I knew I had to leave my feet to have a chance at it. It was a great feeling."

Salem-Keizer manager Steve Decker, addressing the team after the game, said it was a collective effort but singled out McBryde.

"That is one of the best catches I've seen in my life," said Decker, a former player in the major leagues.

Boise manager Steve McFarland had similar thoughts.

"It's one of the best catches in a pressure situation I've ever seen," McFarland said.

The Volcanoes completed what many fans probably expected after the team won a record 55 games in the regular season. The title is the third in 10 seasons for the short-season Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

The Volcanoes took a 6-0 lead after four innings and cruised into the eighth when the Hawks erupted for four unearned runs with two outs.

Russ Canzler drove in two runs with a single during the rally. Alfred Joseph and Josh Lansford also had RBI singles for the Hawks.

Juan Trinidad, who led the NWL with 16 saves this season, allowed one hit in the ninth inning.

When second baseman Brad Boyer threw to first baseman Brett Pill for the final out, Volcanoes' players charged the mound to congratulate each other in a brief celebration.
