Chicago Cubs

Lefthander Donald Veal got off to a great start at Low Class A Daytona and was even better after moving up to the Florida State League, finishing the season with a 2.16 ERA in 154.1 innings with nearly twice as many strikeouts (174) than hits allowed (91).

Honorable Mention: Last year, righthander Sean Gallagher had the stats, but not the stuff. This year, he had both--gaining 2-3 ticks on his fastball, reaching Double-A, and compiling a 2.51 ERA in 164.2 innings with 171 strikeouts. With 16 home runs, catcher Jake Fox fell only five short of the Florida State League home run title, despite playing just 66 games at High Class A Daytona. While he scuffled at Double-A, catchers with power don't exactly grow on trees.

An update on Cherry:

While at West Tenn, Jaxx manager Pat Listach and pitching coach Mike Anderson began to report that Cherry’s fastball was topping out in the mid to upper 90s.

In only his second Iowa appearance, Cherry faced three batters and left with an injury to his middle finger – the result of a bone spur that would soon require surgery.

“I threw a fastball and at the extension point of it, I felt a pop. It was excruciating,” Cherry said.

Days later, Cherry flew to Chicago for X-rays and was told he needed surgery. He’s currently wearing a splint on the finger, which he was told he must carry for eight weeks after the operation took place.

.................

The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Cherry says news had begun to spread that the Cubs were close to giving him a call up to Chicago days earlier.

“That was the word around town and through my agent,” Cherry admitted. “You don’t know that and can’t say it’s going to happen until it happens, but I’m pretty confident that with the way I was throwing, my time was going to come if I’d stayed healthy. We’ll see what happens next year.”

He plans on playing in either Puerto Rico or Venezuela.

I found this from a week ago on Mitch Atkins:

Ace Mitch Atkins, a right-hander who is 12-3 with a 2.36 ERA, skipped his Thursday start and threw on the side instead. He will make two more starts, beginning today, then pitch on normal rest for the playoff opener.

"It's an honor to start the first game of the playoffs, because that means they have confidence in you," said Atkins, a league All-Star whose ERA has been 2.28 or better in every month but June.

That success has been the result of consistently commanding his low-90s fastball, curveball and and changeup.

"I think there's still a lot to come from Mitch," said Lester Strode, the Cubs' minor-league pitching coordinator. "He's got a good pitcher's body, a loose arm and good arm strength for a 20-year-old kid. I see him being a definite major-league pitcher one day for the Chicago Cubs."

Atkins' emotionless approach seems to make him an ideal opening-game playoff pitcher.

"He's hard to read sometimes," Strode said. "You don't know if things bother him or not. You almost have to pull his teeth to get an answer sometimes.

"I think that's a positive when he goes out there to perform. He's calm, cool and collected. He keeps all the energy inside him, and when the bell rings he shows what he's made of."

Actually, Parmelee is getting his first ABs for the series today.

Aaaaaaand Estrada - who had thrown 4 no-hit innings up to this point - gives up a BB and two bloop singles as Beloit has tied the game. The Snappers have runners at second and third with one out.

And the Chiefs tie it right back up in the bottom of the 5th:

Davey Gregg singles.

Valerio Heredia sac bunt, Gregg to second.

Errant pickoff throw hits Gregg, Gregg advances to third.

Chirinos grounds out 5-3, Gregg scores (might have been a play at the plate but the third baseman juggled the grounder).

Jesus Valdez grounds out, 6-3.

Game tied at 2 after 5 innings.

Game's still tied 2-2 at the seventh inning stretch.

Jesse Estrada's night should be over: 7 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 4 K.

I have to head out for a bit, by the time I'll be back the game should be over. Go Chiefs!

Despite getting one run in the 8th, Peoria falls short and is eliminated. :(

Peoria lost 4-3.

Boise is currently down 5-0 at the top of the 6th. Ceda went 4.1 and gave up 5 ER, striking out three.

Matulia is 1/2 and Colvin is 2/2 with a double. That's pretty much it for Boise.

Boise loses 5-0. Series tied at 1 as we shift to Keizer, Oregon for the final three games.

Adam Cowart went the distance for the shutout. Only Colvin (2 hits) and Matulia (1 hit) got hits for Boise.

Poor Chiefs. :(
