Who can blame him? It's amazing that speed & defense were the catchwords last off-season.

Paul Sullivan / The Trib[/url]"] Defense rests

Ryan Dempster got the loss Wednesday, but he wasn't the only Cub to have a really bad day. Just like Tuesday night's comedy of errors, the Cubs' defense was a wonder to behold.

"It was a collection of mistakes , and that's why we lost this whole road trip," catcher Michael Barrett said. "It's not because of one guy."

Ronny Cedeno's throwing error in the first led to the first Pirates run before Jacque Jones played peek-a-boo with Victor Santos' third-inning grounder down the right-field line.

Jones watched the ball ricochet off the wall as he overran it, then four-hopped his throw to second as a routine single became a double.

Jones also was asleep on the basepaths, a recurring theme for him. He was doubled off first on a popup to shallow right in the third, seemingly oblivious that the ball had been caught until he saw the throw to first. The Cubs also were caught napping on Santos' suicide squeeze in the fifth inning. Reliever Les Walrond attempted a diving catch, but the ball popped out of his glove, allowing a run to score.

Jock is terrible. I hate the fact that this guy was signed to a 3 year deal. Hendry is the worst GM in baseball, no question. Nothing goes right in this organization because it is run by incompetent fools!

This is my biggest beef with Dusty...I've never felt a team he's headed has been fundamentally sound, and there's no excuse for that at this level.

Is Sullivan ripping on a guy who is trying to make a diving catch?

I think Walrond's play was just the latest in the litany of almost-but-not-quite plays.

Though his AAA fielding record was not impressive.
