Tigers lefthander Andrew Miller, the No. 6 pick in June's draft, will be called up today to work out of the club's bullpen. The move will also make Miller eligible for the postseason roster if the club chooses to carry a lefthanded reliever to complement Jamie Walker. A clause in his major league contract mandates Miller, 21, be called up this season, but now he's going up even sooner than expected due to an injury to Mike Maroth. He's appeared in three games for high Class A Lakeland, giving up two hits and no runs in five innings, while striking out nine.

Will be interesting to see how he basically handles the jump from UNC to the big leagues, even if he's hidden a bit in the pen. I think it's a stupid addition to the contract.

Doesn't it start his arbi clock? Maybe that's why the player/agent wanted that clause included.

We know why he wanted it, it's stupid on Detroit's end.

I am pretty sure Detroit knew what they were getting into before they drafted him. Besides its hard to argue with anything they have done this season.

ugh.

maybe I'm just old-fashioned in a "you-gotta-earn-it-first" kinda way, but that just bugs me that he/his agent pushed for that kind of clause.

I believe Xavier Nady had a similar clause when he was drafted.

Troy Tulowitzki - the top prospect in probably the second best farm system in baseball - was called up to Colorado:

The Rockies are giving their fans a pretty good glimpse of the future. Just a couple of days after calling up catcher Chris Iannetta, the Rockies promoted shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to the big leagues on Tuesday. The seventh overall pick in 2005 is expected to make his debut tonight against the Mets.

Tulowitzki is expected to be the Rockies starter at shortstop the remainder of the season, then head to the Arizona Fall League in what appears to be an audition of sorts for the full-time shortstop role in 2007.
