Very interesting. Will finger-tapping ability be the trait the next Billy Beane exploits?

Seriously, tho, this takes sabermetrics to the next, next, next level--measurement of metrics that may or may not contribute to the ability to play baseball well.

I disagree with anyone who says these tests are unhelpful. I think testing reflexes is hugely important. This game is all about reflexes. Also, seeing how Pujols took to that one test where he needed to cross out all the a's and the way he analyzed it was very interesting to me. On the field you often times have one second or less to analyze a situation, problem, etc and find a solution for it.

The way he did it sounded like analyzing a pitch heading towards the strike zone.

Same thing I was thinking. Reminded me of the Ted Williams display at Cooperstown that displayed all his avgs for the diffeent zones.

I don't think that Williams display was an actual statistical measurement of his batting average on pitches in that location, but rather his guess on his batting average.

The research is sort of interesting but I don't see much predictive power there. I'd be more impressed if the researchers established some correlation between test scores and MLB talent (reflected in OPS for instance). Ruth did well, Pujols did well ... but what if all MLB players do about as well on average? I'm sure there are many ordinary Joes they could take off the street who would do well in some of those reflex and symbol recognition tests who wouldn't have a prayer of hitting a baseball.

I'd be more interested to see some kind of objective/scientific assessment of baseball hitting talent that involved the Conditioned Ocular Enhancement:

I'll bet Albert would mash on that machine right out of the box.

I suspect that is why the researcher qualified the measurements with these comments....

White said Pujols' performance on any one test doesn't explain his abilities; it's the whole package that probably counts.

"My hypothesis would be that there's something special about how he puts it all together" on the field, she said.
