Scott Boras' offseason free-agent class is getting stronger by the month.

Texas outfielder Carlos Lee, who will join Alfonso Soriano as one of the top offensive players on the market this winter, has told the Rangers that he is leaving agent Adam Katz and will now be represented by Boras, Texas general manager Jon Daniels confirmed to ESPN.com. ...

The Brewers sent Lee to the Rangers as part of a six-player trade on July 28 after he turned down a reported four-year, $48 million offer to stay in Milwaukee.

As long as he pays for one. I'd prefer Soriano.

I greatly prefer Soriano over Lee.

Out of LF and 2B, I'm looking to have one position filled with a hitter who can get on base at a good clip and the other filled with someone who can hit for good power. Since we already have Murton at LF (who can get on base), if we put Soriano at 2B that solves both needs. If we jettison Murton for Lee, then we still need to add a 2B who can get on base.

Soriano batting 5th behind Lee and Ramirez would be very sweet. Barrett 6th behind him, Pierre and Murton at the top of the order, Izturis 8th and I guess Jones 7th, that isn't that bad a lineup.

If I had to pick between Lee and Soriano, I'll happily go with Alfonso. Succeeding the way he has in the cavern that is RFK is pretty damn impressive. He'd tear it up at Wrigley!

He wouldn't be playing for a contract though.

Another reason to stay away from Carlos Lee. I didn't want the Cubs to go after him this offseason, and now I really don't want them to.

That's how I feel. I'd much rather have Murton/Soriano than Cedeno/Lee

Murton is giving us good OBP and good production for his cost. He is very valuable and has shown good progression this year, unlike Cedeno.

Hendry actually has a very good relationship with Boras.

I'm putting my money on the Cubs offering "reasonable" contracts to both at seperate times, then both signing with other teams and Hendry saying they were too much money.

Soriano right now is one of the elite offensive players in the game. Case closed. The things he is doing this year is unbelievable for a guy his size. He is absolutly crushing the ball specially when he played the Cubs. Plus, he has what 30 stolen bases. He is Pierre + Aram = Soriano.

This guy should bat prob. 3rd on a normal team, but if Lee comes back to 05 form Soriano would be a great 5th hitter. Lee and Soriano could add 80 HRS to the Cubs line up.

...or he'll overpay for the amazing Cliff Floyd.

With Lee and Soriano both poised to receive top free agent dollar you can rest assured the Cubs will only make a slight gesture to sign either. Just like Beltran and others.

Agree completely. CLee will be grossly overpaid and Murt is already looking like a cheap and effective #2 hitter. Soriano would be most welcome at 2B but unfortunately Jim will want a ballcatcher there. I'm just hoping Jim will be captivated by Soriano's basestealing. He seems to value that sort of thing.

Don't like Soriano or Lee, I'd prefer Andruw Jones to either of those players.

Why?

Shorter contract, better defensively (even if he is slowing down), equal offensively and overall I like Andruw Jones as a player, moreso then Soriano and Lee.

Sort of his ignorance clouding his bad judgement?

How about making a slight effort to sign Pierre, let him do a long-term contract elsewhere and pocket the draft picks. Trade for Andruw.

And then sign Soriano to play 2B, anyway.

Then you could have:

Murton

Barrett

Lee

Ramirez

Jones, A

Soriano

Jones, J

I often wonder how much, if any, "you scratch my back/I'll scratch your back" may be going in on baseball behind the scenes.

Take the Greg Maddux trade for example. Scott Boras, who was involved in the last minute deal that sent Maddux to LA, supposedly has an excellent rapport with Hendry. When I heard about that deal on the 31st, the first thing that I thought of was that the deal was done as a favor to Maddux, and now Boras will steer one of his clients to the Cubs in the offseason.

Wasn't it Scott Boras, who desperately got his client Jeff Weaver out of Detroit at a trading deadline, only to surprisingly push Pudge Rodriguez to sign with the Tigers an offseason later?

I also seem to remember a trading deadline that Boras pushed Steve Phillips to take on Kenny Rogers, and then followed it up by having one of his other clients sign with the Mets the following offseason.

Anyway, just some thinking out loud on my part to see if a Barry Zito or a Carlos Lee is magically going to appear in Cubbie Blue this offseason due to Hendry taking care of Maddux.

Any other Boras free agents this offseason?
