It's not like the Cubs need lights for home playoff games.

Woulda been handy in 84.

How so? I thought SD got home field due to a stupid rotation.

That's right. Back then, home field advantage alternated between the East and West divisions from year to year. It had nothing to do with which team had a better record.

yea, but it was the east's turn and the cubs had to give up a game because of the lack of lights.

The east had home field advantage the previous year (Los Angeles vs. Philadelphia). I verified that by looking at the box scores on http://www.retrosheet.org.

I was at the first night game, the one that got rained out after a point, and it was AWESOME. I was 20 years old and with a bunch of people that were 21 or older ... yeah, I was the designated driver, to say the least. We were soaking wet but it was a memory that can't be beat. Lights had to happen. I hate for some classic things to change, too, but it had to happen. I hear they are adding more night games next year, and I am not crazy about that, but what will be, will be!

i would prefer *zero* night games for the cubs, personally. Dismantle the lights at wrigley. Get rid of the ads behind home plate. Get rid of the ads on those upper-deck scoreboards, return those boards to those semi-functioning light bulbs if you have to. Get rid of that lawnmower race. I have a question: Why did the Cubs need to give up home field advantage in the playoffs when they couldn't play at night?... Couldn't the cubs have made some agreement with MLB wherein the cubs kept all home-field advantages and played during the day in the playoffs? Let me know what the deal was with that.

It's called television dollars. The big money requires games to be played at night because that's when the audience is bigger.
