The Red Sox are rumored to be in all sorts of deals and Wily Mo Pena keeps popping up as a guy they can move.

They want a reliable starter, which unfortunately the Cubs don't have (outside of Maddux, who won't be going to the AL).

Any creative ideas out there that nets the Cubs Wily Mo Pena?

Carlos Marmol?

Not sure the Red Sox want to gamble on a rookie is the problem. Now if Marmol was used in a 3-way deal with another team that has a starter on the block...

Example:

Blue Jays get Marmol

Red sox get Lilly

Cubs get Wily Mo Pena

Insert various prospects that complete the deal.

Now why would the Blue Jays wants Marmol? Just like the Red Sox, they are still in the hunt for the playoffs, and may not gamble on a rookie starter/reliever. So, I doubt the Cubs are going to land Wily Mo Pena.

Good chance that the Jays don't make the playoffs this year anyway, Marmol isn't much of a downgrade if any from Lilly, and Lilly has said he wants to sign with somebody near his home (CA?) so they'll get nothing for him after this year. I would seriously consider it if I was the Jays. They've got some pitching signed thru another few years and the hitting could be there.

I do think that would be undervaluing Marmol. Will Mo isn't a stud by any chance he has a life time average of .257 he strikes out 1 out of every 3 times he goes up to hit and he still has to develop into a full out power hitter if he is going to hit that style. Marmol on the other hand is only 23 years old and has outstanding stuff. He has been thrown into the majors early and he is adapting. If he had control of his pitches he would be around 6-2 right now. He is only giving up around 7 hits per 9 innings which is pretty good for a 23 year old and the Cubs are going to have to reley on pitching in the future. His romodel is none other than Zambrano so you want to keep Marmol here so Z will stay around forever, and hopefully they progress the same.

Gonna have to disagree with you here. Ted Lilly has been a solid big league starter for years. I am going to have to see more out of Marmol.

I see he's got a .377 OBP this year (although mostly due to high avg.) But that's 60 points above his career. I know he's young, but I don't see him as the type of guy who whill consistently put up those kind of numbers.
