Per Cubs scouting report.

 

If the Cubs could just get Marmol to cut down on the walks, he'd be OK. He gave up one run on four hits and six walks over six innings while striking out six in his last start against Houston and held on for the win. He's walked 18 in 16 1/3 innings in his last three starts. A converted catcher, Marmol also notched his first big league hit with a single.

 

OK!!? If he could cut down his walks, he'd be GREAT!! I mean what part of a 3.86 ERA with the walks, is OK!!? He's got the second lowest ERA on our staff per 6 starts. Second only to Zambrano, and is in his first year, jumping straight from AA. What part of that and his ackomplishments, are OK!!?

I think he could turn out like Ervin Santana next year; he'll be decent this year, but he'll be much, much better with a year under his belt. Marmol has better K rates and allows less hits than Santana, if he could cut down on his walks I think he'd be better than him too. He only walked 11 men in all of June so hopefully he's just struggling to find his release point right now and things will straighten themselves out as the season rolls on.

yet another incredible minor league K/BB ratio guy that Rothschild turned into a nibbling walk machine.

 

While his K/BB ratio has been great in the minors, he also walked too many guys.

 

Can't say about the nibbling comment since I've only seen one of his games.

His K/BB ratio was good this year and in 04, but in 03 and 05 it wasn't so hot. I'm hoping he'll learn better control as he matures and gets more experience, but I think he'll be hit or miss with his control throughout the majority of his career. Then again Zambrano has pretty much been the same way and it hasn't hurt him too much so hopefully that'll happen in Marmol's case as well.

What does he have, 450 professional innings? And I'm assuming that's with very little pitching experience prior to the conversion. Control should not be surprising. I just wonder if the Cubs organization is the right one to get a guy to fix such a problem.

Well some pitchers (IE Zambrano) has enough raw talent to succeed in spite of the cubs organization. I see Marmol as the second coming of Carlos Zambrano (just not quite as good, but up there in that range of ability and results).

I'm more just frustrated that none of the Cubs minor leaguers seems to be able to have the same results in the K/BB department that they developed in the minors. Marmol's just one of any number of guys you can point to that doesn't walk anyone in the minors, then comes up and walks the world. while it is expected to a certain extent because they are facing full rosters of major league hitters, you would think one of Wuertz, Aardsma, Ryu, Guz, Hill, Marmol, etc. could come up and not walk the world. even Prior keeps slipping in this department. if you want to see evidence of Rothschild's nibbling philosophy, there's no better place to look than Mr. 0-2 to 3-2 himself.

As for Marmol, he has the same issue as all Cubs pitchers. Some guys can win with the walks (Zambrano), but most cannot. Let's hope he is given the chance to figure it out either in AAA or the big leagues over the next two years.

I definitely want Uncle Larry gone, but I just want it noted that most pitchers (no matter the team) will have their K/BB slip once they hit the big leagues for a myriad of reasons.

Honestly, it's not like it's Derwood only or anything, but those cliche sarcasm responses do get really, really old.

 

"Catch the ball," "Clog the bases," "That dude saved us" etc.
