He will continue to get half players. Speed guys who can't hit, good fielders who can't hit, good hitters who can't field, good hitting catchers who are a liability behind the plate, good defensive catchers who are a liability at the plate.

They will look for impatient hitters. They will overemphasize pitchers who strikeout 1 hitter per ip. They will overspend on mediocre free agents. They will offer million dollar contracts on pitchers coming off of surgery.

They will continue to try and catch"lightning in a bottle".They will let it be known who they want to unload and get virtually nothing in return(unless you see a high value in 24 y/o A ball pitchers).

In other words....Business as usual.

I don't think they overmphasize pitchers who strikeout 1 guy an inning. Look at the college stats of the pitchers they've taken in the last two drafts. None of them fooled anybody. I don't think there's a single one who averaged more than a strikeput per inning. They just got done putting together a $7Million package for Jeff Samardjza, and he struck out only 61 guys in 97 innings while giving up 103 hits in his senior year in a weak baseball conference. But hey, he's tall. They are going to let Wuertz and Hill wallow away in AAA despite the fact that nobody down there can make contact off either of them. What they do overemphsize is height and "projectability". If this organzation made decisions(especially in the draft) based on a performace related metric like strikeouts per 9, we'd all be better off.

I think this organization is slowly but surely focusing on baseball smarts and OPS. You see more of it in the minors, but Hendry has been patching the parent team for three years. Perhaps he can take some more time because of this disastrous season and develop a coherent package for the 2007 version of the Cubs.

Actually the exact opposite has been happening. Ever since the Nomar trade, Hendry has pretty much lost his mind.

I say a kick butt in your face manager that stresses fundamentals. That's who Mr. Hendry is going to pick for manager and get the gosh darn players that'll fit the bill. Yes sir that's my answer.
