Five former LSU standouts, including a football player, a baseball player, a gymnast and two track athletes, will be inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame on July 10.

New inductees to the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame will be All-American tailback Kevin Faulk, All-American batting champion Todd Walker, vaulting superstar Jennifer Wood and national champion sprinters D’Andre Hill and Cheryl Taplin.

Todd Walker, a 1998 graduate of LSU, was one of the greatest hitters in SEC history. A first team All-American two years in a row, Walker led LSU to a national championship in 1993 as he earned the College World Series MVP award that year. He was named first-team All-SEC three times and was the SEC Player of the Year in 1993.

Walker finished his career as the SEC all-time leader in hits, runs, RBI and total bases. During his major league career, Walker played for the Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox before joining the Chicago Cubs where he is the starting second baseman.

Congrats, Todd!

That's debatable. :(

Geaux Tigers! I got the privelege of playing HS baseball (and soccer) against Todd Walker - we all knew then that the guy would be a Major Leaguer.

It's notable that Toronto's BJ Ryan went to the same High School. Todd graduated from Airline HS in Bossier City, LA (Albert Belle's dad was a coach there) in 1991 while B.J. Ryan graduated in 1994 or 1995. It was cool having played against two Major Leaguers while in HS.

I am sure other posters here have similar stories, which I think is interesting...

I pitched against Todd Dunwoody in high school. Not quite the same as playing against two guys that have actually had sustained success at the major league level.

A few quotes by Walker...

"First and foremost, winning that national championship in 1993 was the biggest baseball moment of my life," he said Monday before he was inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame as only the second baseball player. Joe Adcock, who played in 1947, was the first.

"I can remember those last two games in Omaha as if it was yesterday," said Walker, who delivered the game-winning single and finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run in a 6-5 win over Long Beach State to get the Tigers in the national championship game the next day.

"I don't even think any of us slept the night before the championship game we were so pumped up," said Walker, who is far from any championship games at the moment as a member of the struggling Cubs.

"Getting into this Hall of Fame is an awesome deal," he said. "I've had some difficult times in pro ball. I think that's why I really appreciate this more."

I played against Damian Miller. And also against a lesser known guy by the name of Jeff Schmidt (had a cup of coffee with the Angels) and quite a few career minor leaguers.
