Calling up kids is not a solution to anything. I've said this before, but here we go again:

The Cubs are a LARGE MARKET TEAM. A team with a payroll pushing $100 million should not be relying on more than 2 or 3 homegrown "kids" to win. $100 million teams don't drop everything and go young. They don't rebuild. They reload.

At least they should. The Cubs shouldn't have to rely on Guzman, Marshall and Marmol in the rotation next year because they can afford better.

Whether a team is $100+ million or not, there is an inherent cycle involved that requires youth. The Mets "reloaded", but it wasn't without the rebuild aspect of the cycle. Mineya timed the acquisition of proven veterans with the break-out of the club's best youth and that is what is required.

The Cubs missed the prime timing window in 2004-2006, but they still hold several key youth roster spots for at least another year. I think they have one shot at reloading in 2007 before requiring a down year or two to rebuild. Even big market clubs have to go through the cycle, unless they jump from 100 to 130+ million.

With a core of Zambrano, Prior, and Cedeno, and with one definitive veteran long-term (Lee), the Cubs do themselves a service by overhauling management and reloading for 2007. The core to build around is still pretty darn impressive, as it contains two aces strong 3-hole star, and a promising young SS.

Agreed.

I'm all for calling up kids that have a chance of succeeding at the major league level - Hill and Guzman, for example. Calling up non-prospect organizational fodder (Theriot, for example) just for the sake of doing it is a pointless exercise.

I'd rather have a guy like Theriot on the team than Neifi or Womack.

Fontenot deserves a shot too. 308/396/452

I just do not understand why they never give this guy a shot. Probably because he walks too much.

I can't see a single reason why Womack is still around. Dusty doesn't even use him much anymore. Total waste of a roster spot.

Is it possible that Hendry is just too close to the subject right now and needs to take a step back and evaluate? I just can't believe he would be this clueless and if he is I have no interest in having him be the GM. If we keep yelling from every angle somebody has to hear it.

It's possible Hendry has attached some importance to finishing with a .500 record and that's why no fire sale yet. I agree it's hard to believe he actually thinks the playoffs are realistic at this point.
