It's likely that it wouldn't take much in the way of prospects since Jones is in the first year of a three-year deal worth about $12 million and the Bombers would essentially be offering a salary dump, though it's unclear if the Cubs would be willing to deal; Jones is hitting .288 with 13 homers and 35 RBI.

I will give them $10 if they'll take Jones and pay his entire salary.

Trade high, Jim. Trade high!

As much as I'd love to see it happen, I'm not expecting it. Hendry signed Jones for a reason, and my guess is he feels justified in doing so with his recent play. Unfortunately, it's not likely to continue (especially for two more seasons).

Unfortunately, I agree 100% with this post.

the cubs would be insane not to trade jones if the yanks want him. i would just hope they get an outfielder or 2 in return. anyone know anything about melkey cabrera in aaa or brett gardner in aa?

Jim Hendry has been making some real strange moves since last November, I wouldn't be suprised to see him hold onto Jones simply out of stubborness. He seems to having buying low down pat, but selling high is not his strong point.

Make this deal yesterday. The only downside, is who replaces him? Pie isn't ready. Mabry full time?

Jones has been the Cubs best hitter during the past two months. Right now, based upon his stats and his salary, he is a relative bargain. Also, he is just entering his prime, so I believe (though many disagree with me) that he can keep this up. Right now he is on pace for a .290 average with 30 hrs. That's pretty darn solid for $5 mil.

Sure...but the Cubs aren't going anywhere this year, and he's signed for 3 years. It's a salary dump. What if he goes into a slump similar to the one he had at the beginning of the year? Sell high.

Even at his best, Jacque Jones isn't so great that there won't be better components available in the next free agent market. If you can get value in return, you make the trade.

Wait a minute. My math is a little rusty, but Jones was born in April of 1975. By my calculations, that makes him 31. I don't know the exact years that are commonly accepted as "prime years" but I'm pretty sure they are in the 26-29 range. Jones is likely at or past his prime. Either way, there is no way he is "just entering his prime." So even if he hits .290 with 30 homers this year, it's very unlikely that he'll do that for 2 more years (given past production).

Besides, we're not winning this year. If someone is willing to give up a decent prospect and eat this ridiculously risky contract, just tell me where to sign.

But making a deal while JJ is playing this well would be an admission that JH doesn't expect it to continue - an admission that he was wrong to sign him for 3 years. Reality tells me that JH isn't going to admit he was wrong. My guess is right now JH is about to break his arm patting himself on the back ("I knew he just needed a change of scenary. I am the BEST.").

I'll have to disagree your your statement that he's entering his prime. He is having a good year so far, but he is 31. His best seasons were 3 and 4 years ago, when most players do reach their prime, at ages 27-28. He's been downhill since, and I'm just afraid he's having a hot few months.

He may prove me wrong, but I don't think he'll produce like he is now for the next 2 1/2 years remaining on his contract. If the Cubs can get anything for him, they should do it.

What do I win?!?!

Now, whenever people say "great minds think alike", you'll know exactly what they are talking about. :D

Restovich?

The Cubs would have to feel like they just won the lottery if some team is willing to take Jones off their hands. He should be on the next flight to NY. Who cares what we get in return.

What's the difference? This crew isn't going to do anything anyway. Play Restovich; who cares? Just get rid of that commitment.

I like this idea. Restovich wasn't great in his short stint this year, but if he's terrible for a few months - who really cares. Low cost, no risk option. Unless you get a near-ready OF from the Yankees, I'd go with Restovich.

Actually I disagree with 50% of my post.

Hendry values defense rather heavily, hence 'catch the ball' theory...and Jones has been nothing if not a liability, especially with that HORRIBLE arm of his. Cost us at least 6 runs already. I can't think that Hendry forgets that so easily.

Jones for Bubba Crosby, straight-up. I just want someone named Bubba on the team.

Does it really matter? We don't need someone in RF until next season.

Exactly. Hell, put Blanco out in RF when Barrett returns and call up Soto. That should be at least good for a laugh or two.

Blanco in RF would be close to the funniest thing in the history of the game. Funnier than Hundley even.
