You'd have to start at the soruce of the problem: Hendry.

Replacing anyone else or bringing in anyone else only puts a band-aid on the symptom without fixing the cause of the hurt.

We have a bad roster. That's on Hendry.

We have a bad fit for a manager for that roster. That's on Hendry, too.

So if you truly want change within the organization that is lasting and meaningful, you don't leave the man in charge of setting the tone for the organization as it stands to remain in place. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The problems we have now can be fixed in the short run, but they're all going to re-occur in the near future if we don't address the guy who could have and should have avoided them in the first place.

Sell the team to a decent owner with plenty of $$$ and a passion for the game.

The Trib is a faceless boardroom full of non-descript suits who are beholden more to their stockholders than winning baseball.

Again (and again), it's irrelevent what the Tribune boardroom does, they've provided enough money to win.

When was the last time the owner had anything to do with a guy hitting the cutoff man, getting caught offbase, or walking the bases loaded?

Blaming the Trib is old and tired...blame Jimbo for this debacle.

I just want a manager who won't coddle his players. The day after Jacque over throws the cutoff man I want to know that he was forced to practice that throw 50 times. Piniella, LaRussa, Leyland, Bobby Cox, even Ozzie to an extent all demand that there players know the fundamentals. They may not always have the best players but they usually have very fundamentally sound teams which in turn makes them a consistently good team.

I believe this Cubs team has more talent than their record suggests. That is what bugs me. I hate when players and teams don't play up to their ability.

I want a manager who loves the game and is fiery about it. Baker doesn't seem to love it to me, it seems like it is just a job to him. The reason certain managers have outbursts on the field is because they get so frustrated with the way their teams are playing. When the Cubs lose it doesn't seem to me as if Baker cares. If we had a manager that had passion for the game we would be a much better team. I strongly believe that.

I'm not arguing Baker may or may not be part of the problem. I just don't think Piniella is the answer. Firey temperment would not be even at the bottom of the list of criteria I'd look for in a new manager.

I get frustrated at the lack of fundamentals as well, but I don't think a firey manager fixes that.

This team needs a better approach to how it is constructed. Changing the GM fixes that.

Wrong.

Everything starts at the top. Hendry is an employee of the Cubs just like MacPhail and Baker. The Trib are the owners, who are in turn responsible for hiring the management for the ballclub, starting with MacPhail. I fail to see why so many cannot accept this.

It's most certainly NOT a case of simply providing enough cash, and that's it. Anyone who has ever owned a corporation will tell you that.

I think soul is right. If you hire someone to do a job and they don't do it they should be fired. The Tribune Company hired MacPhail to build a winning team and he hasn't so he should get fired. Macphail hired Hendry for the same reason and Hendry hired baker for the same reason. They should all be fired for not doing their jobs. It is that simple.

Then again maybe they are doing their jobs because the team is still making money. Which in the end is all business is about. The question should be what is the intent of the Tribune company? Do make money or to build a winning team. Do they fork out the money just to make it look lke they want to win or do they do it because they trully do want to? I do not have the answer to that.

I'm happy to blame the Trib for MacPhail and Hendry's continual employment, but I'm not going to blame them for not putting up enough money. $96 million is more than enough to win a World Series. I don't think that's what you're arguing, but I know quite a few people love to fall back on that one.
