"I like football players as baseball players,'' Baker said. "They tend to be tougher. I've always said the kids I like to play baseball are football players, basketball players, wrestlers and water polo guys because they know what hard work and training is.''

So would a dream draft pick for Hendry and Baker be a toolsy, former water-polo player who can catch the ball?

I read that qoute too. At this stage I try to take everything Baker says with a grain of salt the size of Utah. One has to filter what he says. He's worse than Bush at saying things in a way that make him look real bad.

I mean, they (football/baseball players) tend to be tougher than who? Regular baseball players? Does this mean that baseball players don't know how to train hard?

I don't think Dusty meant any of that. I think he was trying to say something nice about the kid from ND and meant no disrespect to anyone, but it sure didn't come out that way.

I don't see the problem with this quote. Training for football, basketball, wrestling, and water polo is much more intense than training for baseball. Why would you not prefer someone who does more than just play baseball?

You must have had different baseball coaches than me.

Either that or different football and basketball coaches. We worked awfully hard in baseball, but it was nothing compared to the running and conditioning with the other sports. I watched a few wrestling practices in HS and had a couple of friends on the wrestling team at Iowa (under Dan Gable) and those were by far the most intense. Never seen water polo, but I'm guessing you gotta be in decent shape to tread water that long.

Amen to that. I don't see any issues with Dusty's quote either. I don't think there is any doubt that the demand for conditioning is greater in other sports. That's not to say there aren't athletes with self-motivation in baseball to achieve the same level of fitness, but the minimum expectation in baseball is lower for certain.

No doubt - I'm pretty sure no baseball player has ever been asked to put a teamate on his back and run to the top of the stadium.

They might have been asked, but they refused, put a dip in then went golfing.

Basically this all a fancy way of dressing up Dusty's ACTUAL quote...

"Wait, I'm managing a WHAT team?!? I thought this was football!"

If Dusty thinks minor league hitters are the most dangerous, we should call these guys up immediately, god knows what kind of records college and high school hitters would set!

Yes, especially since the new Mets stadium will have a warning moat
