In my opinion these two draft years were very, very bad. looking at 2001 there is no one even noticiable except for prior and soto.

2002 was even worse! Just look at those 4 first round picks for a second please! are you kidding me! this draft could very possibly be the worst draft ever. atleast we got hill in it, but besides that all very negative.

hopefully we can look back at this years draft a few years from now and be happy with it, becuase the past years drafts for the cubs have just flat out stunk!

From 2001, our 3rd round pick Ryan Theriot is tearing it up in AAA. He was in the majors for awhile but only got about 5ABs. Other than the two you mentioned, and Theriot, there wasn't much in the draft that we have held on to.

The 2002 draft had alot of talent, but even more injuries. Dopirak, Craig, Hill, Hoffpauir, Walker, Cherry, and Wells are all still doing pretty good in the system. Brownlie, Blasko, and Hagerty have turned out to be disappointing but still have a shot to contribute IMO.

I beg to differ actually.

In 2001, we drafted Sisco, Nolasco and Harris. All 3 were top prospects of ours until we traded Harris and Nolasco and lost Sisco in the Rule 5 draft. Ryan Theriot was just on the big league club, and is having a fine season. Dwaine Bacon, among others are still in the system, and according to this, we drafted Khalil Greene, current SS for the Padres.

In 2002, I'd say it was an ok draft. Granted, Brownlie hasnt fulfilled his potential and Hagerty's been hurt. However, we also drafted Dope, Petrick, Hill, and Craig, all of whom could make it to the majors, and we drafted Jones, who had tons of potential but we traded him away. Some names I recognize later on include Spearman, Medlin, Hood, Atlee, and Bear Bay (another we shouldnt have traded)

I think we need to wait a few years before we assess these drafts and label them "good" or "bad".

Really, to look at those two drafts, you have to look at the full drafts. In 2001, after Prior and before Sisco, both of whom were highly regarded pitching prospects, there are maybe 7 guys now in the majors, including David Wright, Mark Teixeira, and Bobby Crosby. Unfortunantly, Prior hasn't reached what we all know he can do, and Sisco, well, we all know about Sisco. After Sisco, there are only a few guys who are making impact on their ML teams now. In fact, 2 of the top 40 who we didn't draft are now in our system (Lewis and Fontenot).

In 2002, despite having 4 first round picks, our first one wasn't till the 21st pick. Before that, BJ Upton, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis, Jeremy Hermida, Khalil Greene, Russ Adams, Scott Kazmir, and Nick Swisher had been taken, as well as Scott Moore who now plays for West Tennessee. After Hagerty, there were only McCann and Hayden Penn are really high rated.

The fact of the matter has been that drafts are usually a crap shoot. You want to look at a bad draft for the Cubs? Look at 2003. We took Ryan Harvey, who, sure, could still turn it around, but hasn't really done as well as he could. After him? Lastings Milledge, Chad Cordero, Carlos Quentin, David Aardsma, Matt Murton, Ryan Wagner, Rich Wood. The 163 pick? Sean frick'n Marshall.

Also, in 2001 and 2002, the people we passed up were passed up by other teams as well. Why? Are they as bad? Did they have necessarily better drafts? Want a really bad draft from that year, look at the O's. They have had nobody really develope from the draft.

2001 and 2002 were both weaker years, with 2001 being stronger and having a bunch of young guys who take a while to develop.

While we've had our problems, look at the Royals number 1 picks in the 90's...

and according to this, we drafted Khalil Greene, current SS for the Padres.

He chose to go to college and wasdrafted in the first round(13th overall) by the padres in 2002.
