What happens with the player's salary when he gets DFA? Does the team still have to pay him for the year. Also, if another team picks the player up, who pays the salary. Let's just say the Cubs decided to DFA Neifi Perez and the Royals pick him up. What happens to the remainder of his contract?

If the Cubs would release the little munchkin I'd pay his salary!!! Well, I would if I had the money.

But I think if someone claims him off waivers they have to pay him. If he clears waivers and then they sign him the Cubs have to pick up his salary. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.

It depends on what happens to the player after he's designated for assignment. I'm not positive about this, but I'm pretty sure DFAing a player just means he's taken off your 40-man roster and you have ten days from that point to do something with him. (Be it a trade, place him on waivers, or give him his outright release.) If he's traded it's just like a normal trade; the partners agree on who pays how much of the player's salary. If the player isn't traded he must be put on waivers or released. If he's put on waivers and claimed by another team the player and his contract are now their property. (So the claiming team is on the hook for the remainder of the player's contract.) If the player clears waivers he can be sent back to the minor leagues, but if he has more than five years of service time he can refuse the assignment and declare free agency. Either way, the team that waived/released him has to pay off the remainder of his contract, just like if they gave him his outright release.
