While I agree with what you guys are pointing out, nobody is saying Tejada is going to get us into the playoffs singlehandedly. Everyone needs to stop looking for that mythical player. Outside of Pujols, they do not exist for THIS Cubs team. Even Cabrera probably wouldn't be enough to ensure a playoff shot. Getting Tejada, Cabrera, whoever, needs to be looked at only as a step in a larger plan. A big step, yes, but just A step.

And that's just a general rant, not launched at anyone in particular.

I understand that completely. And it's why I want to know more of what we have in Cedeno before I give up Marshall and likely Pie to get Tejada. If Cedeno can play SS at a high level, then I'd rather focus my energies in improving the offense in other places.

This team can go in a lot of differant directions. Thats what makes baseball fun. I guess we have to just wait and see what Hendry wants to do. BTW, Vance, I would still vote for you to be GM.......as long as you landed Cabrera.

Not to derail this thread, but the idea of a NSBBer for GM begs the question: Where the heck has Hoops been?! Talk about a guy who has his ear to the heartbeat of the Cubs organization. . .

You're right. I have not seen Hoops around for awhile now. Anyone have any info on his dissappearance?

Personally I think that we're already seeing what we have in Cedeno -- great defense, solid average, little patience at the plate and few walks, modest pop. His comps are going to wind up being guys like Lugo, Eckstein, and *gulp* Neifi.

And frankly, IMO the defense and especially the average are more likely to get worse, than the walks and power are to get better.

I hope I'm wrong, but he doesn't figure to be much more than a league averageish SS.

You're probably right there. If that's the case, Tejada may be a good move if we can't improve the offense in other places. On the other hand, shortstop is one place where I don't mind giving up some offense for defense, if we have offense in other places. Tejada's defense is not great now and it's only going to get worse through the life of that contract.

I'm not opposed to getting Tejada. If this team was above 500 and in contention, I'd probably be in favor of the upgrade now. I just hate the idea of trading young talent for a player in a season when that move isn't likely to pay dividends when better moves for the future of the franchise may be available at a later date.

I dont care about getting rid of Guzman if we can get Tejeda for Guzman you cant go wrong. We need the slugger and what we need in the offfseason is to sign another pitcher not rely on Prior or Wood for once in the last 3 years.

I'm asking for Cabrera, Tejada, and Craig Wilson. Is that too much?

Yes it is. How about just Cabrera and Tejada?

The Cubs need all 3. I see no reason to get Tejada unless the Cubs make a change at manager/GM. Any move is moot until then.

The Cubs need to start dividing their organization into two columns: guys who will be on their next pennant winner (column A) and guys who won't (column B). I definitely agree with Vance's comment that if the Cubs were in contention acquiring Tejada now would make sense, but under the circumstances they certainly shouldn't trade any column A guys to get him.

The good news is that Tejada is on the O's, a team with minimal front office acumen -- maybe the Cubs can steal him.

The bad news is that Tejada was 30 on opening day and for a variety of reasons is likely being a little more careful with those, uh, vitamin B-12 injections than he was last year. It's not certain that even if the Cubs got him he would be in column A.
