I almost feel like Baker has been set up to fail this year. Not intentionally or anything, but I don't know of any manager that would work any kind of magic with this team.

I agree...but it's the first place to start....one of many changes that need to be made in order for this team to contend.

It is just change for the sake of change if other things are not addressed. A hollow gesture. If Baker gets fired, somehow I get the feeling he becomes THE fallguy and Hendry continues. In that scenario, the Cubs would be pretty much re-arranging deckchairs on the Titantic.

I think the apathy was pretty high from 99-02. 2003 stirred the pot much more than '98 did. 2003 gave people a sense that they were on the verge of greatness. '98 just reminded people how fun a good team can be. But they knew it wasn't in it for the long haul.

A lot of people got that feeling then, but there was amazing Sammy show to distract people from how bad the rest of the team was. Remember also the 2001 team was in the Wild Card spot past labor day.

My brothers called me last night (they were at Pac Bell) We are all cub fans at different ends of the spectrum. My oldest brother is a Dusty s done guy who has little tolerance for any poor play or attitude. (he played pac 10 football, and i think he brings that mentality as a fan) My youngest brother ( who went to his rival college) is much more analytical and wanting to see the season play out. He like myself is not afraid to call bad what it is. However does not believe in blanket bashing of players and managers.

I think it would take a continued horrific streak to get Baker fired. Im not in a hurry to see that happen. I want the cubs to play better. I agree with Goony on the point (it was well articulated) that the present management team has taken us from crappy to competitive. ( obviously we are hurt right now.) I also question whether they are the right group to get us the next level.

I think all fans should try to enjoy there favorite team, inspite of the garbage play for the past 13 games.

Questioning your teams moves is a fans right , i have done it since 1970 when i became a fan. But i personally tired of these guys getting me depressed when they sucked. That was me giving to much credence to results and i became to emotional watching the team.

I guess im saying as a cub fan , part of the pride has to be the never ending journey from hope to dissapointment to hope again.

May our paitence one day be rewarded. Have a great day Baby Bruin lovers. Coach L

I know this team is bad, and part of this is due to injuries, but what I am tired of is people using it as an excuse to justify the poor fundamentals that have been manifest in every one of these Baker/Hendry teams. There should be no excuse for it and as a fan we should all be upset that current management GM and Manager are completely inept.

I think it is time for a change. This team is going no where with Baker at the helm. While the current failures of the team may not be all Baker's fault, that's just the nature of accountability. Baker never failed to take credit for the success of 2003, so why should he deflect from himself the blame for the current failures. He's not getting the most out of this team. Even poor teams should be able to avoid long losing streaks. Baker is unable to right the ship during these times.

We are currently in an 8 game losing streak.

Last season we had two eight game losing streaks and one seven game losing streak. I stopped counting how many times we lost three or four in a row.

That is unacceptable. His contract is up at the end of the year. It's time to move on and moving on should occur without Baker.

Time to get rid of Dusty, and all of the coaches, Get a new younger skipper, and new blood on the coaching team. I have just gottin tired of lazy, non thinking players, getting picked off base and excusing that as hustle playing. Rainbows over the cut-off man allowing runners to advance, etc. We need to fix this team Mr. Hendry.. NOW

Sorry, I can't back that statement because I can't imagine true fans would want their team to lose.

True fans with a long-range outlook do.

Yes cubdad you are a cub fan, stand proud, but the team is bad and playing worse, Bench Pierre for a week and let him think about how to get the ball past the second baseman. Cedeno has been good, Murton mostly good, and that is it, I can't stand Jones, He really looks as though he is trying to hit the ball out of the park every at bat, and that is not professional, he is swinging so hard that he almost falls down.

I predict we will win tonight

Okay but seriously, does anyone think simply changing the manager makes any difference in the long run?

Look, I don't post here much so I don't expect people to pay much attention but I've followed this trainwreck for 20 years and I've seen what little effect changing the captain has made.

I'm not opposed to a managerial change but there needs to be more change accompanied by that. You can fire Dusty Baker and hire Joe Torre and I don't think you will see all that much difference.

Baseball teams are only as good as their players. I believe this to be a universal truth. If you don't have the players, you aren't going to win squat, period. This team at the moment doesn't have the players to be anywhere near the playoffs. No amount of coaching will change that.

I've like some of Hendry's prior moves but right now the team is a mess. And it's not that this is an easy situation. You have guys like Wood, Prior and Lee injured. If these guys are healthy, they make a huge difference. But you can't predict their health.

I mean Lee, I think we can count on him being back. He suffered a fluke injury. But guys like Prior and Wood, they seem to have systematic injuries. So at what point do you draw the line and move on? Hey, I like both of 'em, Prior moreso. But how long do you hold yourself hostage to the rehab of these guys? I think Prior can make it, Wood I doubt. But in any case, I think you have to approach future baseball decisions assuming you cannot count on them.

It's just a mess out there. And I think plenty of blame can be spread around.
