I agree completely with what JC said. At the time, it was a pretty silly signing given the supposed state of the system and the other needs on the team, especially offensively.

That said, i'm thrilled he's off to this kind of start, and if he keeps it up, he'll have earned the salary we paid him, albiet at the back end (and in a contract year).

Personally I think the contract year stuff with Maddux is kind of ridiculous. I think his improved performance due to his offseason workouts is a matter of self pride. Maddux was not satisfied with his performance the last couple of years and he did something about it, not because of it being a contract year.

I find it odd that his self pride kicked in after a subpar season and before a contract season.

I think he did the same things he always did in the past just thinking that would be enough. I don't think he slacked the last two seasons I just think he relized he needed to do more knowing that this was possibly going to be his last year, and he didn't want to go out on a sour note. Just my hypothesis

As I said in my edit, given that we're paying him borderline #1 starter money, he should have been in shape before 2005. Now all of a sudden he's in shape and 4-0.

Sorry, didn't see the edit. I know we have a difference of opinion on this, but if riding his bike and playing golf in the offseason is the same program he has been on for the last 19 years, including when he was the ace of the Braves staff, that is probably all he thought he needed to do. He actually did more than that, it's just he started getting in shape earlier and with a trainer.

Maybe, maybe not. His agent has been all over the place talking money and possible destinations, so that sort of hints at the contract year concept.

When/where has Boras been doing that? I haven't seen anything.

He talked to the beat writers while they were in LA and talked about socal as a possible destination. There was an undocumented story on this board from somebody saying Mil was a possibility due to his brother being there. Not sure if that's true at all, but it would fit the mold of Boras's negotiating techniques (stories about every team being interested and offers from all over).
