Hey Bruce,

If you have a second or two.

I noticed that all three papers (Daily Herald, Trib, Sun Times) print the exact same themed story on most days. For example, today it is Jerry Hairston and Derek Lee. Yesterday it was Grissom.

Why is that the case? Do you guys only get access to a few players each day?

Just curious, keep up the good work, and enjoy the warmth and sunshine,

That's a good question. In fact, I had my Jerry Hairston story written a week ago and planned to use it on the off-day in the schedule. But then Mr. Prior got hurt, and out went that idea. I picked yesterday as the day to run it. I haven't seen the other papers yet, so I don't know what they've written.

Some days, the story line is obvious. Derrek Lee played in his first game since the WBC. So it was natural for all of the reporters (radio, Web site, newspapers) to want to to talk to him. In fact, he was waiting for us. If it's Derrek Lee, it's a big story, and everybody is going to "lead" with it.

For the night games, we have limited access. We talked to Dusty before the other night's game, and the subject of Grissom came up. It was my "lead" note because of the 25-man roster issue and Dusty's history of preferring veterans.

We have access to just about anybody who is there on most days. The Trib ran a Dempster story the other day. I ran a Dempster story last month.

On some days, the story of the day jumps out at you. On other days, you pretty much decide on your own.

Bruce thanks for all the info. Also thank you for being available for taking time out to spend with us.

You're quite welcome. I enjoy it, and I learn a lot from you guys, too.

Bruce, one more question....

Have the Cubs began discussions with Lee and Pierre about extending their deals. I obviously place a higher priority on Lee than Pierre, but how do you see the '07 OF shaping up. It appears to be rather obvious as Pie should do well at AAA, Pierre is a FA, and Jones and Murton are locked up. But, does the fact that Hendry traded 3 players to get Pierre impact the concept of him only be in Chicago for one year?

I'm curious about this as well. Steve Stone was opining on The Score today that Pierre is only here for one season because Pie will start in CF for 2007.

Chris DePalma (not sure of last name)Chi. Sun-Times was on XM Home plate this afternoon to talk Cubs baseball & said the same thing. Right now it's all speculation.

This is from yesterday's game thread:

yeah Bruce... have you heard anything knew on extending Lee, I heard that his agent was on the Score today and said that he won't go below Konerko's deal :(

They continue to talk. That's about it. I don't think anything is imminent, but my gut feeling is that something gets done.

Do you think talks were slowed up b/c of the shoulder?

btw, thanks for the pbp. :D

No, the shoulder had nothing to do with the talks "slowing." The agent has other clients, and both sides are taking their time.
