Now that the Red Sox have pulled off a coup and acquired Wily Mo Pena, does anyone else see the Cubs making a push to land Trot Nixon? He could provide insurance in case either Murton or Jones falters.

If there is a fit, what do you think the Cubs would offer to the Red Sox?

I think Murton and Nixon are very comparable offensive players, with Murton on an upward track and Nixon on a downward one, so I don't know if there is much value in platooning them. I would imagine the would want starting pitching, which we don't have to give right now.

I'd like to see the Cubs trade Pierre, move Jones to CF, and put Nixon in RF, defense be damned. It's not like Pierre is a gold-glover, anyway. Murton, Jones and Nixon would be a pretty decent OF from an offensive standpoint.

For leadoff, you could platoon Hairston and Walker at 2B, having JHJ leadoff on the days he plays. When Walker starts, give Cedeno a shot at leadoff, though frankly, Murton would be the better bet. Matt is a better base stealer than Cedeno, and a significantly better hitter with higher OBP.

As to who the Red Sox would want for Nixon, and what we'd be willing to offer, hard to say unless they'd be at all interested in Slappy.

So I take it you were a big fan of the Henry/Sosa/Hill outfield?

I was a huge fan of any outfield that had Glenallen in it.

Nice, so was I. That guy could flat out mash. I regard him as the best pinch hitter in Cubs history. I can't remember how many times he came up with a bomb off the bench late in games in 98 and 99.

Boston isn't moving Trot Nixon. Pena is there to play in a platoon with occasional spells to the other outfielders.

I'm with you guys on Glenallen, but man was that guy flat out bad in the outfield....yeesh.

There was nothing better than drinking a couple of warm Old Styles and watching Glenallen cover CF. Man, have I ever seen some crappy Cubs teams over the years.

He can also play 1B, so I figure we can expect to see him play a good number of games over the course of next season.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing Nixon here. He and Jones both hammer righties pretty well. Both are pathetic against lefties, so that's where Murton and maybe Grissom could come in, since both have had good success against lefties.

Generally, I am against Grissom coming north, but if Dusty is forced to use him only against lefties, he would have a chance to be useful. Same thing with Neifi.

Basically all he would be good for then is to reduce Murton's playing time. I don't see that improving the team.

Exactly what I said goony. Not to mention, Nixon is injury prone, expensive and may begin to decline at this point in his career when have the same thing in basically a rookie already on our team. Nixon is a name, yes, but let's not forget how good Murton was last season in a decent number ABs. I think we can count on him.

Hey, in a perfect world, I want Murton in there every day, don't get me wrong. But unless he hits .400 for the entire month of April, with power, he isn't going to be playing for long. That's a given with Baker, and Hendry has played the role of enabler by having Grissom around as an alternative.

I've already made the assumption that Murton will be in Iowa by May 15. Part of me just sees this as such a done deal that I'd almost rather forego the Murton experiment and it's almost certain failure and try to get another contingency plan to Grissom playing every day.

Having said that, it's not meant as an indictment of Matt. i just can't forsee him having a week long slump and not being banished to the bench. Here's hoping he's pounding the ball, because heaven help us all if he doesn't.

Dude (no pun intended), this isn't Jason Dubois we are talking about here. Dusty played him a lot at the end of last year and has stated that Murton proved himself last year. He passed the test.

Murton will be fine. He's not going to put up typical LF numbers but he'll be better than Hairston in LF and Neifi at 2B. My concern is that Cedeno won't do as well as last year. And Neifi will be starting at SS.

Do you think they would do Jones for Nixon straight up?

I don't think either team would do that.

No kidding, the Red Sox are too smart to make that trade, and the Cubs are too cheap/dumb.

Honestly, will people cut Murton some slack at this point? Sheesh!! No one is going to force him to the bench, all the kid does is rake, at every level.

What has he done in a Cubs uniform that DOESN'T inspire confidence? He destroyed minor league pitching last year. He comes up to the bigs and hits over 300 with nearly a 400 OBP. Now this spring, he is playing every day and batting over FIVE HUNDRED.

Oh yeah, he played in the fall league too, and ripped it up there as well.

Dude is not only going to start 150+ games, he will be our 3rd best hitter. I predict he will be hitting 5th in the order before Father's Day is here.

I agree 100%

I don't really think it's Murton people are questioning.
