Jim Edmonds' uniform uniform will be green from head to toe when the 'Cards start playing in their new place. Take his drama queen antics in the field and add the fact that the sod will be less than four weeks old: he's going to be fallin, slippin' and slidin' all over the place.

It's Wednesday 3/15 and the Cardinals are just now laying down grass at the new Busch.

Workers begin installing stadium sod

By Tim O'Neil

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Wednesday, Mar. 15 2006

Beneath bright sunshine, workers today began unrolling thick Kentucky bluegrass sod across the infield at the new Busch Stadium. Cardinals management expressed confidence that the grass will be settled and

ready when play begins in April. Workers anticipate unrolling all 28 truckloads of grass from a sod farm near Aurora, Colo., by Friday.

Team management also is trusting that the new stadium will be much easier on grass than old Busch Stadium, where keeping sod lush was a constant challenge. The old ballpark opened for business in 1966 with grass, but stadium management switched to artificial turf in 1970 because sultry summers and back-to-back baseball and football seasons ground up the grass.

The Cardinals brought back grass in 1996, but groundskeepers had trouble keeping the Bermuda green. Joe Abernathy, vice president of stadium operations, said the old stadium threw too much shade across the turf and didn’t allow for breeze.

Roger Bossard, who is overseeing the turf-spreading job, said the blended turf will be less threatened by illnesses that ail grass than did the Bermuda in the old park. Pop-up sprinklers have been installed beneath the surface throughout the field to provide quick quenchers on hot days.

Bossard is on loan from his job as chief groundskeeper for the Chicago White Sox.

Abernathy said the stadium is about 90 percent complete. In the stands, workers installed rail-type backs on the bleacher benches and flashed colorful fireworks explosions across the new scoreboard.

I don't see why they are "just now" putting the sod in is a problem or concern. Teams replace sod all the time during the season and its never a problem. Why would putting it in less than 4 weeks before the opener be a problem?

I still can't believe just how quickly they got the stadium put together. Its quite remarkable really.

Well OBVIOUSLY Chief, they should have been intalling the sod in JANUARY to allow it to be well rooted by early April.

Not as green as you are with jealousy and envy

Why would he be jealous? Pierre>Edmonds.

Alsonotreally.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I know, not a fair comparison. If Pierre is the sparkplug Eck is for the Cards he will make a huge difference for the Cubs.

But there's going to be a lot of people stretching doubles into triples with that arm.

Not necessarily. I don't think the Marlins gave up an inordinate number of triples (or doubles for that matter) while Pierre patroled their outfield. Playing halftime in Wrigley Field may give him the opportunity to make some of those would-be doubles long outs.

I don't really understand this. When the ball clears the fence isn't it a HR? With the injuries we have, and thus the staff we're forced to send out; Pierre will more than likely be watching the balls go way over his head. :(

It won't be that bad. I think Williams is going to have a nice year.

It's time for the youngsters to step up and make fans forget about Prior and Wood.

Don't lose hope yet...

Looking great!

That is going to be an awesome place to watch baseball. I can't wait to get down there for a few games this year. I hope it doesn't have too much of a shopping mall feel to it. It will take a few years to build some memories in the new place, but it looks like they've built a great place to showcase baseball and not distract people with swiming pools and toy trains.

Good. Now, get to work on the rest of the city. PLEASE!

No tax base...

Having lived ten years in St. Louis, I think St. Louis is a poorly run city. It has a low tax base, but with the 1%city earnings tax and the high entertainment and events (including sporting teams) taxes, St. Louis shouldn't be what it currently is. They told people the dome/convention center would bring back downtown.... thus far it hasn't. Now they say the ballpark village will bring back downtown -- we'll see. I'm still trying to figure out who's going to purchase the lofts being built downtown. It would be hard for single people to purchase them and families are more likely to move to the county or the Illinois side.
