I said he was a really good #5.

And that's wrong. I'm not huge Maddux fan, but he's a legit 3 in the NL. At worst he's a very good 4. He's not 5, really good or otherwise. 5 pitchers across the league don't come close to his level of effectiveness as a pitcher. He might not be worth his money, but he's better than even a really good 5.

Hypothetically, if you leveled out baseball and called the best 30 pitchers "ones" the next 30 "twos" etc., the fives would be mostly guys who aren't good enough to be back this year. Hypothetically twenty of thirty "fives should be replaced by rookies or Rusch's. Saying he's a five is tantamount to saying he should retire because he doesn't belong on a major league roster.

Luckily the field isn't level and the Cubs have a full house: aces over threes!!!

Maddux could be the #3 on a lot of teams. The #4 on almost every team. The #5 on a playoff calibur pitching staff. That said, he's gonna give you 5 innings.

No disrespect from me about Maddux. Greatest pitcher I've ever seen when he was in his prime.

Name the teams he's #5 on. Even if there are 1 or 2 that doesn't qualify him as a very good #5. That's just a foolish statement with no basis in reality. You don't say Paul Konerko is a good backup first baseman because 10 other teams have a better starting first baseman.

He's probably #2 on the Yankees. He's easily 4 on STL, maybe 3. He'd be 3 on Boston.

Maddux definately would be at least a 4th starter on every other team and probably a 3rd. Sure he isn't as good as when he won the Cy Youngs in the 90's. But he is by no means a horrible pitcher.
