so, let's say it's 2008.

your position players look alot like this:

LF: Matt Murton

CF: Felix Pie

RF: Brandon Sing

1B: Brian Dopirak

2B: Eric Patterson

SS: Ronny Cedeno

3B: Aramis Ramirez

C: Michael Barrett(?)

maybe it's not totally realistic(the kool aid has got my mind warped), but would this be enough to compete?

The future that I like to look at is the '07 rotation

Carlos Zambrano

Mark Prior

Angel Guzman

Jerome Williams

Hill/Ryu/Marmol/Marshall - FA, Zito?

You must not be too optimistic about us keeping Lee, huh?

nah, i love dlee; i just said this for the sake of conversation. i mean, would these guys be able to produce on a major league level and win?

A few years ago we said "Bobby Hill, Brendon Harris/David Kelton, Jason Dubois, Corey Patterson..." and look at the team now.

But, if moves were rare, then that would be our line-up.

If Dope can return to form at the AA level this year, his value will be sky high and a he would be great trade bait if this team is in the hunt or even not if it means getting a young corner OF. I'd much rather hold on to Lee then try to groom a free swinger.

I'm pretty much in agreement on the rest. I'd like to see Scott Moore continue to improve in the Cubs system and he could come up and be a corner IFer if Ram or Lee leave. Jake Fox might be your future at catcher and I was impressed with his defense on Sunday which is great given his bat.

Sing could start but wouldn't provide enough power to that lineup. I think he could fill out a nice future bench that could feature Theriot and Mcgehee.

Thank God it isn't our lineup. You could reacquire all of them for very little now. BTW, you forgot Hee Sop in that list.

You also never know who the Cubs could snag in the draft this year. If they take some one who's really advanced for his age (Wes Hodges, for example), he could be in the majors by 2008.

However, this is not a team on a limited budget. While it's nice to dream about some of those guys, the Cubs have the resources to make a run at some of the top position players in the game through free agency and trades. Of the prospects/young guys you listed, I think Murton, Pie, Cedeno, (and Patterson (in that order) are the most likely to start and produce in the majors come 2008. However, that's not a guarantee.

We have like what, 1 pick?

The first rounder is reasonably high, but after that, there won't be any picks until the fifth round.

Yay.

If you are coming up with a lineup with guys out of the Cubs system for 2008, I'd think you'd put Harvey in RF before Sing.

Anyway, I think we should consider ourselves extremely lucky to have reasonable production out of Cedeno, Murton, Pie and Patterson by then. For 1B they'd either need Lee or some outside hitter. RF is probably going to have to come from outside the organization (although Jones will probably be out there)
