Not to be disrespectful, but how many championships have teams who follow Bill James' philosophy won (not including the Red Sox and their 150 million dollar payroll).

Well the Yankees were preaching orginization wide paitence at the plate long before Beane wrote his book.

The Red Sox have hired Billy James and Voros McCracken, two of the most renowned "statheads" around.

Mark Shapiro, the GM of the up and coming Indians, leans towards the stats side.

The Cardinals are another one.

I mean only the Yankees and Red Sox have won rings, but not suprisingly (to me at least) the teams that use these tools are also some of the more stable franchises in the game as far as being competitive year in and year out.

BTW I think my post on this is a bit late. Just wanted to say that.

Well that and...yes Adam Dunn would be a fine addition to the Cubs.

Florida, an average pitching staff in 2005.

Willis 68.1

Beckett 36.2

Burnett 33.1

Moehler 16.3

Lieter -11.2 (in 80.0 IP)

The 2005 Marlins were average/below average in the NL for OPS, WHIP, K/BB, and ERA.

Bleh, VORP. For pitchers.

There wasn't much average about Florida in 2005...

W,B&B - 625 IP, 550 H, 37 HR, 192 BB, 534 K, 3.11 ERA

Other SP - 342.1 IP, 398 H, 36 HR, 154 BB, 232 K, 5.10 ERA

Bullpen - 475 IP, 511 H, 43 HR, 217 BB, 359 K, 4.85 ERA

No, far from being average, they were sensationally good (Willis, Beckett and Burnett in particular). And they were sensationally bad (pretty much everyone else).

Okay, that's not quite fair. To group Todd Jones (career year), Jim Mecir (who cares), Scott Olson (promising) and Jason Vargas (also promising) in with the sensationally bad group isn't right.

So, let's group those four in with W,B&B, and you get...

Good (7 pitchers) - 835.1 IP, 742 IP, 50 HR, 264 BB, 710 K, 3.12 ERA

Bad (20 pitchers) - 607 IP, 717 H, 66 HR, 299 BB, 415 K, 5.57 ERA

Importance of depth, anyone?

Outfielders on market

The Phillies still would trade Bobby Abreu if they could find a match.

Given that my earlier Sheffield-for-Manny Ramirez suggestion hasn't been acted on, how about Sheffield for Abreu?

Now that Scott Hatteberg has been signed for first base, the Reds might shop that extra outfielder they've been carrying for a while. They have Adam Dunn, Wily Mo Peña, Austin Kearns and Ken Griffey Jr., with Peña most likely to go for young pitching. Previous owner Carl Lindner rejected deals for Griffey (including one with the Cubs last year), but maybe new owner Rob Castellini will do the right thing.

I think the writer meant to say the White Sox, but there's some smoke that the Reds will be dealing one of there outfielders.

If Sean Marshall keeps pitching well this spring, how about Marshall + Ryu + Dopirak for Dunn?

Yes, do it. But would the Reds do it?

It's doubtful. The Reds would want Pie in any deal for Dunn.

I still say do it.

If the Fish are going to offer Miggy at the trade deadline, I would MUCH MUCH rather have him. I guess we have to wait and see how it plays out.
