Maybe this is a stretch, but with Garner, LaRussa, Yost, and Tracy all forseeably locked up, does this impact Baker's mindset enterring the 2006 season?

Astros extended the contract of manager Phil Garner by one year, through the 2007 season….

"We are very pleased about the performance of our team under Phil, including reaching the World Series for the first time in the history of the franchise," said Astros chairman and chief executive officer Drayton McLane, Jr. "It is an exciting time for the Houston Astros,..."

He's made them better since arriving in Houston, he'll make some odd moves at times, but he's had a productive tenure there.

As far as Dusty...

I don't think it impacts Baker's mindset as far as how he manages the team or whether or not he accepts a multi-year deal (if it's even offered).

He likely has the inner-confidence that regardless of the possibility of a lack of coaching opportunities that his resume/track record is strong enough that if he isn't in Chicago, he'll find a situation to his liking.

You mean maybe Baker will recognize he's completely outclassed in this division and give up?

I wish. But sadly, he's too thick skulled to see it, and Hendry's average cranial bone mass is increasing every day.

In short, we're going to have to live with Dusty for much, much longer than we should have to.
