The last two seasons at AAA he's put up some pretty decent numbers but he has too little slugging power to start.

'04: .311/.368/.440

'05: .297/.380/.407

I mean, he showed most promise back in '99 with a very nice line of .334/.392/.542, but that was seven years ago.

The guy is gonna be 35 next year. Why are we holding on to him? A possible 4th OF? Last year he had 499 ABs!

This just confuses me...

Baker likes the guy so the Cubs throw him a AAA contract and yearly NRI as a favor to Dusty.

Whenever I see a guy that old playing in the minors I assume he either really loves baseball or really dislikes his wife.

Murray is a real life Crash Davis. He is the guy who is supposed to show the young "Meat" how to act on and offf the field. Every ML team carries a guy like this in the minors.

Thank you. I knew there had to be some kind of rational explanation.

Yea, one of the great things about the I-Cubs is Murray and Hubbard, always there always having fun. Trenidad's gone now, though :(.

Calvin Murray is one of the nicest guys I've met in baseball. Last spring, I did a feature on nonroster players. I asked Calvin what kept him going. He grabbed my notepad and tape recorder and said, "What if I took that away from you?"

Enough said.

(He did it in a very nice way, by the way.)

Baseball needs more guys like this.

I'm told Calvin is now working in Scott Boras' office. They could probably use a nice guy there!

Does that mean he will not be playing next year? I feel like I brought this on him through my thread. :(

Nope, he won't be playing.

Hopefully, it's not a case of former players>avail. coaching/scouting positions.

Although, it is surprising how many former players look down upon the possibility of becoming a scout.

Well that settles that question I guess. I wish him luck in his pursuits.

Thanks Mr. Miles.

Carrying that forward, that means we've lost three of our AAA OF spots, in Murray, Kelton, and Grieve. That's 1,252 ABs opened up in AAA OF.

Wow, well played.

I remember when Calvin was playing here in Shreveport for the AA (San Francisco) Captains. He really didn't hit well at all then, which really was unfortunate because he has/had tremendous speed.

Regardless - a bunch of the Captains lived upstairs and next to my apartment, and Calvin and a few others would play wiffle ball with us in the parking lot. He was a really nice guy, and that meant a lot to a few college baseball players to be mingling with minor leaguers.
