White Sox that is...

Ben Grieve - OF - White Sox

White Sox signed outfielder Ben Grieve to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Grieve and Ozzie Guillen hardly seem like a match, but Grieve might be an upgrade over Ross Gload as a reserve DH and pinch-hitter. He's still not likely to have a job on Opening Day. Jan. 19 - 5:01 pm et

No matter what Grieve does, I still won't be able to forget that at-bat late in 2004 where he pinch hit in the ninth inning and struck out without ever lifting the bat from his shoulder. Certainly not his finest moment.

To be honest, I think I would have rather had Grieve in RF than Jones.

He'd be quite a step down defensively, but there's a very good chance he would compare closely to Jones in OBP and SLG...and possibly AVG, unless of course, Jones reverts to his 2002-2003 ways. Grieve is also a year younger, and a helluva lot cheaper.

I find it a bit sad that he has to settle for minor league deals when Jones, simply because he's faster and better defensively, gets a three-year deal and $5+ mil per year.

WoW!

I'm not saying Grieve would outperform Jones, and he wouldn't be anywhere near the defender. But I think Grieve could do a .260/.350/.440 line, for a lot cheaper.

.350??? WoW

Aside from his 16 AB's with the Cubs, Grieve has never had an OBP below .353.

Grieve has always gotten on base, and he's younger than I thought.

But TT is right -- he probably wouldn't be very good as a regular. He's a fine PH option, but he'd be overexposed by playing every day.

I dislike Grieve b/c of one game.

In 04', I attended the entire meltdon series at Shea. In Game 3, with Cubs down a run and Nomar on second, Grieve came up to PH with 2 outs. He left his bat on his shoulder and watched three consecutive Looper fastballs go by.

I admit it: I have never forgiven him.

grieve at 1/750,000 or jones a 3/15m?

ill take grieve, i dont think we're going anywhere this year anyway, and if we do, it won't be because of the difference between jones and grieve on defense.

Poor Grieve.. I wonder how it is to be a player that one day won ROTY (I think) and hit 28 Home runs in a season... and now he's having trouble making it to the majors.

I, for one will never forget his catch where he collided with the right field Ivy... He was bleeding to make one out. <3

He did the same thing with the D-Rays and when Piniella asked him why he didn't even react when the border line pitch was called strike three to end the game he supposedly responded "What difference does it make?".

That pretty much sums up Grieve, talent but no drive or passion. What a waste.

Or maybe he has respect for authority. And he knows that arguing balls and strikes with an umpire won't "make a difference" unless you want rung up.

So he has respect for authority, but he answered his manager's legit question with "what difference does it make". That's a nonsense argument.

It makes no positive difference to argue with umpires. One of the things I have against Moises Alou.

The point isn't just that he didn't argue. He didn't even grimace, smack his bat on the ground or show any emotion about the fact he just took strike three to end the game.

So when Grieve says "What difference does it make" one has to wonder (as I am sure Piniella did) does he mean what difference does it make whether he argues with the umpire or does he mean what difference does it make whether the D-Rays lose another game when they are hopelessly out of the race.

That's why it makes it difficult for me to believe that he has "no drive or passion."
