I don't know what else would be involved, but giving up a decent pitcher who is signing a very good 3-year contract with you for an over-the-hill CF who can't really play CF well anymore doesn't make much sense to me. Griffey can put up the offensive numbers, but that's if he stays healthy. He hasn't done that much lately. The CF market must really have dried up. Guess Reed and Crisp are costing way too much.

Interesting that Arroyo basically gives Boston a hometown discount for his services, which in turn makes him even more valuable to trade somewhere else.

Rotoworld is saying that Arroyo went against his agents wishes and gave boston a discount. They speculated that Boston gave him a gentlemans agreement not to be traded this year.

Is Arroyo really that good though? I think he's completely replacable, and no better than Jerome Williams. His unimpressive major league numbers are more or less in-line with his equally blah minor league stats. I don't see him turning into much more than a mediocre innings eater. Baseballreference.com compares him closely to Harang and Harkey, not exactly solid company. Now, Griffey has his own issues, but I wouldn't go as far as saying he can't play CF anymore, and Boston needs a CF.

Plus the offense Griffey provides would significantly help their chances in the East and make an offensive hole at SS easier to live with.

Jerome Williams is better than Arroyo, and much younger.

But is Griffery worth the contract that he has for 3 more years? Of course you could say it doesn't really matter to the Red Sox since they have money coming out their ears. And I didn't say he couldn't play CF. He just doesn't play it very well anymore. With Manny probably going to be in left and Nixon in right, that is one atrocious outfield defense.

as opposed to the one they had last where their cf had to kick the ball into the infield.

At least the guy last year could run after a flyball without blowing out a hammy or something.

Damon's weak CF arm is generally way overblown. I can't honestly think of a single game last season where his arm cost them a game, but I can think of a dozen where either his hit or a great catch won them a game.

Don't get me wrong - I think he was quite overpaid by the Yankees, but if he can stay healthy, he'll have at least 2 very good seasons there and he'll be on a bunch of highlight reels making diving catches in that wide open CF in NY. He won't need a powerful arm there, all he'll have to do is have an accurate one to hit the cutoff men.

As far as Arroyo goes - he reminds me alot of Clement in that when he's good, he can be extremely dominant but it just doesn't happen often enough. He has one of the best breaking balls I've seen, and when he can throw it for strikes he really pitches well - problem is when he loses the zone he can't compensate and gets roughed up. One of the upsides to him however is that he can pitch pretty much anywhere - starter, long relief, short relief etc...

I consider him to be roughly equivalent to Williams but I think Williams shows more potential.

I'm with those who think Arroyo isn't that great. Williams is better, and has more potential. I think a trade for Griffey would be a good trade for Boston. Arroyo is more than replaceable, and Griffey is the best option they have in CF, despite he's not near the player he once was.

FWIW, the Boston Globe reports that the rumor of Griffey for Arroyo is false:

Another apparently inaccurate rumor had the Sox sending Arroyo to Cincinnati in a deal for Ken Griffey Jr., who is signed with the Reds through 2009 and could veto a deal to Boston.
