On the same day utility player Eli Marrero agreed in principle to a one-year, $750,000 minor-league contract, general manager Dan O'Dowd zeroed in on Embree, eager to create depth and flexibility for a revamped bullpen.

750K?

The Cubs need a RH'ed bat off the bench w/pop, if they used more objective thinking, they would more likely look for a RH'ed platoon partner w/Jones. Instead, they focus on the overspending of Jones and his contract amount and might not do what's best for the team and get someone who can hit LH'ers.

That 750K...

Is less than what Macias made last year.

The only one with any chance of hitting w/pop off the bench is Restovich, who reminds me of a slightly worse version of Dubois.

A one year 750K minor league contract???

Meanwhile, the Cubs will likely have Grissom and Hairston as the main RH'ed options off the bench.

I hope Hendry hasn't settled for the bench in its current state, b/c it'll be terrible once again.

Yeah, Restovich is the guy I was thinking of. If Hendry fails this year I think it's bye bye time.

I don't. As mention in another thread, by I BELIEVE Bruce Miles, he believes Hendry is safe through 2008.

Eli Marrero?? That Eli Marrero who played for the Royals?

He was brutal when he played for the Royals.

.159 avg .222 obp .341 slug .563 ops

I can see that he'll relive his career under that Colorado air, just like Burnitz and several others did.

The same Marrero that had a .894 OPS in 2004'. The Marrero that has a .973 OPS vs. Lh'ers over the last 3 years, that includes his '05 season with the Royals.

He'd be the best RH'ed option off the bench.

For a bench player, yes. If Colorado is thinking of making him a starter, all I can say is good luck with that. Marrero couldn't even hit right handed pitchers worth a darn.

I think that was the point of talking about how he's making $750k.

Perhaps. We shall see.

In a proper role, I think he can handle a platoon with Jones, b/c Jones isn't going to hit LH'ers as well as Marrero would've. Of course, the Cubs might look at the salary as the determining factor as whether or not to platoon Jones rather than something like *pondering* his previous inability to hit LH'ers.

The Cubs are in an ideal situation to use a platoon with a player who struggles to hit against LH'ers. Marrero crushes LH'ers and struggles badly against RH'ers.

For a minor league contract at 750K, it would've been worth finding out if Marrero could've been a solid platoon option or worse case, becomes a spot starter and the 1st RH'ed bat off the bench.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are looking at Grissom as a possibility to make the 25 man roster.

I'm sure will stay around...I meant it's bye bye time from me ever defending him again.
