Well, personally I'm just against not aquiring talent becuase our manager is a moron. Address the real problem, the manager, by firing him.

Even Grissom's career line against lefties is a lot better than what Jacque Jones would ever put up. Jones by himself = .750 OPS. Jones + somebody to face lefties = .800 OPS. We don't have 50 points to spare...

Of course, to whoever asked what Grissom gives that Hairston doesn't, just look at Jerry's career splits. Interestingly enough, he hits righties better than lefties.

Stepping back and looking at this I thought of something that may have been in Hendrys mind when he signed Grissom. What happens if Pierre gets hurt? Who leads off and Hendry probably doesn't want last years debacle and Grisson may be insurance for that.

Yeah, Walker or Hairston could lead off but we're talking Hendry/Baker so I don't see that happening.

If he thinks Grissom could lead off and not be a disaster he's mistaken. Grissom was as bad as Corey last year. At 39 I don't see a big bounce back year. He'll probably be worse than Corey this year, and Corey isn't even the best backup plan for leadoff.

What a great way to start off my day.

Thank you.

A right-handed hitter, Grissom has a .272 career average in 17 seasons and will be trying to claim a backup job.

Didnt they say Neifi was only back-up when he signed in 2004?

...

I dont really expect one of Dusty's boys to only get the back-up.

How can Grissom be one of Dusty's boys when he's never played for him?

Grissom leading off would be just as much of a debacle, if not worse.

It's not what I would do but given the mindset of this orginization it seems logical. Who do you think they would lead off in case Pierre got hurt? Hello 2005. :pukel:

Bingo. We keep talking about "Dusty-proofing" the team, when the ideal way to Dusty-proof the team is to send him packing. There's something wrong when the main issue of concern about acquiring a player is whether the manager will use the player properly. If the current manager won't, find one that will. I'd like some insurance too but we are in HUGE trouble if Grissom becomes an everyday player for any length of time. As injury insurance Grissom is useless, I'd rather use Corey for that. He at least has a chance of returning to being a decent everyday guy.

Oh I think Grissom would clearly get the job, although Neifi would get a look as well. Hairston would have an outside shot if he gets into Dusty's good graces.

the day that grissom gets 2 starts in a row is the day that i stop wathcing the 2006 season altogether.

Frost...tell that to the GM of the Cubs. I don't they would ever use Patterson in the leadoff spot again, that is even if he is a Cubs on opening day. Pray that Pierre's body doesn't meet the bricks.

Yeah, I looked up the splits right after I posted that questions. Even so, Hairston's less then stellar numbers against LHP are probably better then what Grissom is going to provide. I'm still not convinced there is any conceivable reason that Grissom should make the team.

I totally agree. True story..I woke up this morning and could have sworn I heard on the radio we traded Baker to LA for prospects. I figured I must be dreaming but I'll go ahead and check NSBB to make sure which I did and found out Grissom was a Cub. From bad to worst I tell ya.

I agree. I hope this signing doesn't devalue Patterson even more than last years preformance in the trade market.

It certainly would be nice if the Cubs had a guy on the bench that could hit an HR when he pinch hits.

That's where a more productive farm system would help. We shouldn't have to go dumpster diving for the likes of Marquis Grissom.

It worked when the Cubs picked up Perez and Enrique Wilson!

I'm curious if Grissom is being used to be a teacher for Pie. Hmmm...Pie as a protege. I wonder if Pie would be considered a meal?

Yeah, at this point in Dusty's tenure we can make a solid educated guess at which players Dusty might fall in love with.

This is a minor league contract. That means that Grissom is going to have to MASH pitching in ST and prove that he is 100% healthy to get a spot with the Cubs. Not a big deal at all.

By the way, what was his injury last year that kept him out for so long?

Why does a minor league deal mean that?

The Cubs are very thin on the bench and in the OF, are rumored to really want to get rid of Walker and Patterson, and have an affinity for old players. It's a big deal if Dusty takes to the guy, which is pretty likely.

If Grissom faces nothing but LHP he would be OK, but I said the same thing about Eric Karros.

The trouble is that seemingly all managers find it just about impossible to orchestrate a perfect platoon arrangement, or even a near-perfect platoon arrangement.

What's Adam Greenburg's status? That also seems to be a better option the Grissom IMO.

Greenberg's status: young and left-handed. As in, Dusty's not even going to look up Greenberg's minor league splits to explore the possibility of using him as Jones' platoon partner.

Seriously, Greenberg successfully cleared waivers, surprisingly, so he's still part of the organisation but no longer on the 40-man roster. If the Cubs want to use him now, they have to purchase his contract again. Finally, the next time that Greenberg's designated for assignment he has the right to opt to become a free agent.
