If you look at him as a corner OFer, maybe he should be on the cusp and not in the HOF. But if you look at him as a gold glove, rocket armed CFer, he is a lock with those numbers.

I think he should be in based on a combination of the two.

Note: I will admit to being very bias on this issue. Andre was not only my fav baseball player, he was my fav athlete of all-time, just ahead of Jordan and Sweetness.

To me, Dawson was one of the BEST players of his day, and most of his career he played with bad knees. I think one year he had them drained 8 times and 2 operations.

I am a big Hawk fan, and feel I am being objective when I say he belongs in the Hall of Fame. In a time when steroid-bloated statistics blanket his still impressive numbers, Andre is getting slighted by the baseball writers.

I would be willing to put money down that the Hawk will get in eventually, and here is why:

* One of the BEST all-around players of his time (some of it was played on bum knees).

* 438 HR, 2774 Hits, 1591 RBI, 314 SB. His HR/SB #s put him in a class with only Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, & Barry Bonds.

* 8 Gold Glove Awards.

* 8 All-Star Games.

* 4 Silver Slugger Awards.

* NL MVP in 1987, Two 2nd place finishes in MVP (1981 & 1983)

* NL Rookie of the Year (1977).

* Ranked #44 ALL TIME in hits (2774).

* Ranked #24 ALL TIME in total bases (4787).

* Ranked #41 ALL TIME in doubles (503).

* Ranked #32 ALL TIME in home runs (438 ) .

* Ranked #28 ALL TIME in runs batted in (1591).

* Ranked #21 ALL TIME in extra base hits (1039).

* Ranked #9 ALL TIME in sacrifice flies (118 ) .

* Ranked #44 ALL TIME in intentional walks (143).

* Ranked #6 ALL TIME in power/speed numbers (365.8 ) .

Now if you consider ALL of the players who have EVER played baseball at the Major League Level, and consider the best of the best - Andre Dawson ranked at least in the TOP 50 of ALL TIME in the above categories.

The man is a Hall of Famer. A class act, a great player, and a WORTHY Hall of Famer.

great post - and as you might think, I do agree. He got closer this year. I am afraid next year with some bigger names coming on the ballot that he will be a bit forgotten. But then hopefully keep getting closer.

BTW - it did make me think - Big Mac comes on the ballot next year, how would he compare in those categories with Dawson? I know more HR & RBI's but what about the others? That would be interesing, I just do not have the time to look at it right now...

McGwire leads Dawson in HR, SO, BB, OBP, and SLG.

Keep in mind that Dawson played 750 more games than McGwire. If you level the playing field that way, McGwire would also have a commanding lead in RBI and runs scored.

Man, Andre gave me some of my earliest baseball memories. I remember the grand slam he hit to tie the game at 4 against the Pirates, only for the Cubs to lose it in 10. I remember a game he had against the Braves where he hit the game tying and go-ahead homers.

I was actually at both of those games. The Pirates one is worse then you remember it...after the Cubs were shut out at 3-0 all game, he hit a two-out, pinch hit, first pitch grand slam to give the Cubs' the lead.

Then Dave Smith came in and blew it. Man, I hate that guy.

Later in the same series, he hit an extra-innings grand slam to give the Cubs a five run lead. That was the same game Zim brought in Bilecki (in the pen doing his day-before-a-start workout) to pitch when whoever was ineffective which led to a Cubslapse. A couple days later Popeye was gone.

I get that, but Mark stopped playing because of a series of injuries (cough, cough ) that kept him constantly on the shelf while Dawson played through knee surgery after knee surgery.

Of course, if he didn't play forever, career singles hitter with no glove Paul Molitor would have never gotten to the hallowed 3,000 hit mark and wouldn't even be an option for the HOF.

I will never go to Cooperstown as long as its a place where the Baseball Writer's of America decide who goes...that group of dunces mangles the regular season awards every year and no surprise, mangle the HOF inductions excluding the Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson's of the world.

I still can't believe Mac had only 1600 hits.

1 of 3 hits went over the fence.

Mac aside, Andre is a HOFer.

Somebody slap me because when I read this I thought it was about Hawk Harrelson getting inducted to the Hall as an announcer.

you need a stiff drink!

if joe friggen morgan can be in the hall, so can Hawk.....

as much as it pains me to say it: joe morgan was the superior player that set the offensive standard for all modern 2nd basemen to be judged.

That's the thing that is so shocking. He is a sabermatrician's wet dream. Yet, he still preaches old fashioned baseball.

How Ironic.

john kruk, too.

it took the anti-moneyball player to finally champion the cause.

if i see corey patterson running a successful team in 15 years while bobby abreu is doing moronic commentary for baseball tonight, i'll marvel at the way history continues to repeat itself.

Hahahha!

Joe Morgan, though an annoying know-it-all announcer, was a undebatable HOFer. His numbers and results were incredible.

Dawson, on the other hand, is debatable - BUT worthy. IMO.

I wouldn't put Dawson in the HOF. Cubs HOF yes but not Cooperstown.
