According to an article in the Houston Chronicle, the Astros could trade closer Brad Lidge in order to get a big bat.

It mentions a trade for Tejada involving Lidge and Everett. That could be appealing to the Orioles since they currently are without a closer.

A second deal involving Abreu is mentioned, but to me that's suspect considering the Phillies just paid closer money to Tom Gordon.

Either way, it's interesting to think the Astros would shop Lidge.

Why not trade him to Boston for Ramirez. Houston gets their big bat and Boston gets their closer. I'm sure Boston would pick up some salary. Just food for thought.

This is a smart move IMO. "Closers" are the most overvalued commidity in baseball.

I agree with that point, BUT look at the state that leaves Houston's pen in. They have nobody.

It's no worse than the state of their offense.

If Clemens doesn't come back, it could be a long season for the Astros even if they trade Lidge for a bat.

I can't understand why Baltimore would do that trade. Everett ranks below Neifi and Alex Gonzalez in VORP...i.e. he's terrible. They could pluck any average AAA SS and get comparable production. So in reality, the trade is Tejada for Lidge. Lidge is a very good closer, but Tejada is such a rare quantity, you don't give him up for just a closer. Baltimore fans should boycott the next season if they took that deal.

That pen somehow managed to land them in the World Series. Go figure.

Also, I've been warning about this happening on other posts. They have name commodities in Lidge and Oswalt who could fetch them a big bat no problem. They also have some interesting young pitching. The fact that Raj seems to be either retiring or running off to another team has freed up enough money for them to pursue a big name. Moreover, their offense needs upgrades pretty much all around.
