  1. Havlat is the real deal.
  2. Yeah, but you can't discount them. They did happen for a reason.
  3. And if true this is exactly why the posting process should be reevaluated IMO.
  4. I'm sure Church can be had if the price is right but according to Hoops' source they are asking for a lot for Church right now. I'm sure they know what they've got in him. If it takes Marmol or Marshall to do it I'm all game.
  5. Are you sure? Of course I'm not sure, especially when it comes to this organization but they owe it to their fans to put the best possible rotation out there and if Hill is performing better than the other 3 or 4 projects we have out there then he should stay in the rotation.
  6. If he is outperforming the other pitchers he stays in the rotation.
  7. Wow, unreal. Hendry has lost it. I can understand upgrading the team to make a run for it but at least throw the money around to better players. Sign Zito and Lilly since Schmidt was unavailable. If they want to try and win it then they should go all out.
  8. It looks like there is no more for Rusch. I don't think we will see him pitch as a Cub ever again which is a good thing.
  9. I need 3 to start and have this pool to choose from: Holt L. Coles L. Evans D. Stallworth M. Jones I'm thinking of going with Holt, Evans, Coles or Stallworth. What do you guy think?
  10. Vernon Wells No way that happens. Jones is no beast. Marshall and Mateo might bring a fourth OF type (ie Ryan Church). A mid-high range prospect? Pie? Wells is a rental they know they won't be able to keep. And personally, I wouldn't make that deal. The difference between Jones and Wells isn't Marshall+Mateo+mid level prospect If you find a platoon partner for Jones I bet you the difference would be very minimal. EDIT: Vernon Wells vs RHP: 455AB 26HR 82RBI .292AVG .346OBP .554SLG Vernon Wells vs LHP: 156AB 6HR 24RBI .333AVG .392OBP .506SLG Jacque Jones vs RHP 396AB 21HR 59RBI .303AVG .358OBP .528SLG
  11. he did a nice job last offseason. I've said it many times. "bought low" on Dye is one way to put it. "getting lucky" is another. Dye was a stop gap that turned into gold. Jacque Jones on steroids so to speak. Loaiza for Contreras may seem like some huge improvement to you, but dollar for dollar is was essentially a lateral move. Uribe for Miles...I guess that says something when that is one of the moves you point to in defense of your GM. Jenks was a solid move, put still a blind dart that happened to find the dartboard. Iguchi was a nice move as well. the trade for Garcia, not bad look, the guy took a team that scored 865 runs and turned them into a team that scored 741 runs. to put that into context, the 2006 Cubs scored 716 in the NL. the fact that virtually the entire pitching staff all had career years and the Sox won 8 more games than expected based on runs scored/allowed means nothing to you in evaluating the job he did, eh? Give the man the respect that he deserves. He was the one that took a risk to shake up the entire roster and it paid off. They easily won the WS by dominating the playoffs. He did great that year and did very well last year too.
  12. What healthy pitcher will sign for less than 3 years these days? I hope we aren't done and that a trade for a better #2 option is still availabe (ie Brad Penny) but my fear is that it's not. And Lilly, Marquis and Cotts aren't exactly what I had in mind for strengthening our pitching staff. Sori OTOH I'm counting down the days before we can see him in Cubs pinstripes. This is what pisses me off about this signing. We could have passed on Marquis and swung a trade for Penny, using that money to get him to rework his contract or even give it to the Dodgers. Instead, we sign a guy who completely sucks for more money than I'll ever make in 10 lifetimes. I don't like Brad Penny either so I'm glad we didn't try and acquire him. Actually, I would prefer for us to make a trade for one of the Dodgers OF prospects instead.
  13. I don't like this move, period. 3 year guaranteed contract for Marquis? Jeez I would have liked to have seen somebody else instead. Look at me with a straight face and honestly tell me Rothschild is going to straighten this guy out? I have zero confidence in Rothschild to improve ANY pitcher these days. Here's hoping he gets straightened out but I'm not going to hold my breath that's for sure.
  14. So it's true that we've signed him? Not to his knowledge. He called it a deal on the table, not an agreed to deal. Does he have any other insight as to what other players we are looking to sign or trade for? Thanks Hoops. Nothing new. Cubs are looking to move Jones, but there isn't much of a market for him; they are trying to create a market for him by bundling relief pitching and a pitching prospect. No real bites other than the O's. As for starting pitching, they have inquired about Mark Hendrickson and continue to monitor Jason Jennings. No interest in Batista or Lieber at this point. Still wrestling with what to do in CF. Very interested in Lofton at $3M, but not at $6M. Have inquired about Church, but Nats want the moon. Good to know, thanks. That sucks about Church. The other thing he (based in NYC) told me is that he's 99% sure that Andy Pettitte is going to re-join the Yankees, and it's better than 50-50 that Vernon Wells will be dealt prior to December 31. Pettitte's deal will only be for 1 year. Looks like he was right about Pettitte :)

  16. This sounds far more reasonable than that stupid 3/$27M thing being thrown around. Where did that come from, anyway? Even in an insane market like this, a guy with a 6+ ERA last year is not going to get that sort of money. That's the sort of deal where you can give him a shot, and dump him easily if he pitches like he did last year. Thanks you just jinxed us. Now I'm fully expecting a 3/27 for Marquis :)

  18. I think we would be much much better off leaving Izzy as the supersub. We won't get much out of izturis if you ask me.
  19. if dotel can get back to where he was at while in houston you may be wrong. I'd have preferred to see some indications of him getting back there before I signed him to a hefty offer. It's a one year deal so I think 5 mil isn't too bad, especially considering you are trying to show your fans that you give a damn.
  20. That I could easily live with...(although maybe that's because I have been dreading the idea of 3/27). If its indeed true I too can live with that contract and I didn't want Marquis here to begin with.
  21. So it's true that we've signed him?
  22. Cubs are stacked in the bullpen. They don't need more bullpen arms. I would be very cautious dealing Marshall. Not too many 6'7 left-handers can throw with control. I love how he keeps himself cool and calm under pressure. First: Just because the Cubs are "stacked in the bullpen" doesn't mean the Cubs bullpen is any good. Outside of Howry/Erye/Ohman, the Cubs bullpen is full of ??? and crappy pitchers. So I think the upside of Wagner is greater then that of guys like Novoa/Wuertz, etc. And I like Marshall, but if the Cubs can fill two needs with one stone, then you do it. Marshall may never be anything more then a 4/5 starter in the majors, and those are expendable. Wuertz is good and I think Wood should be just fine in the pen as well. Sounds like a pretty solid bullpen to me.
  23. I don't think he has, and I don't think he's a better option than Marquis. Both Marquis and Batista are terrible. I would rather move Miller to the 4th spot and try one of the rookies instead of signing either of those two IMO.
  24. I used to be on the Huff bandwagon but clearly he isn't the same player he once was. Where did all his power and avg go? Looking at his numbers he wreaks of somebody who used steroids and stopped.
