  1. Just when you think things can't get any worse...
  2. Calling people silly and insane for criticizing a GM who is a complete failure for not getting it done is completely absurd. His job is to get it done. I don't care if a guy preferred the west coast, like the AL, prefers warm weather or anything else. Winning GMs get the job done. Winning GMs convince good players to play for them. Can't argue those points. Hendry has been a failure since second half of 2004 and even with the moves he has made this offseason I'm still skeptical he made enough moves to get us to the playoffs.
  3. I didn't watch the game but I did hear some of it on the radio and it seemed that they had a lot of scoring opportunities but did not score. Hasek was also very good last night it seemed.
  4. Rotoworld: That's a whole lot of cash. I think it's smart for him to take it now. There's no way to know what the market will be like next year, especially with some other really good CF's on the market. Very smart and it's not exactly chump change either. Overall this is a good move for both parties.
  5. There's no doubt leaving Jones with a platoon player at CF is the best move offensively for this team. It's actually my preference.
  6. Really? I see it as close to 100% that Pie will suck offensively. How will that increase his trade value----when he's posting .280 OBPs and whiffing more than once per game? I don't get it. I don't see how you can see it as close to 100% that he'll suck. If Pie played regurlarly in the bigs next season I would put the over/under at .260 / .315 / .425 for his stat line. No real formula, just my best guess. So on par with Izturis. Can he play SS?
  7. How about we get back on topic or move this to rants?
  8. I'm not the biggest Izturis fan, but if you look at him at 26 he compares similar to Omar Vizquel when he was that age. Vizquel had similar type numbers and eventually developed into a solid hitter. If you get the chance look at their stats from early in their careers. Lets see if Izturis will develop more, he is still young. Hopefully he will be one of Gerald Perry's new projects. Working on OBP. Have you seen how bad Izturis' numbers really are? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6638/career;_ylt=AoJmvMk8Uw_93CIdkyz5IWGFCLcF He's terrible. I would rather take my chances with Theriot in the lineup.
  9. People are wasting their time talking about this shortstop thing and Giles. The Cubs, whether you like it or not, are happy with Izturis and are not looking for a shortstop. They signed DeRosa for three years to be their second baseman. They are not going to sign Giles. I cringe at the thought of Murton being platooned. There's no reason to take away at-bats from this promising young player. His splits don't warrant it, either. Unfortunately, Jones is horrible versus lefties, and should almost never face them. Bob Brenly is that you? :)
  10. They just signed Gagne to a 1yr 6mil deal.
  11. The DUI's don't really have anything to do with them making millions. It's the drug dealing that gets me. I can somewhat see why a person with nothing, and no means for upward mobility, would get into the drug business game. It's their only chance to make millions. I can't understand why a player wouldn't at least wait until after his career to dabble in such a career. The risk to your legit income is just way too high. To me it does. Why drive your car when you are making millions when it is so easy for you to hire a personal driver? Drive your car when you are not drinking but if yo know you will be drinking that find other means of transportation.
  12. Jeez some of these players are dolts! It's not good enough they make millions but they somehow find ways to get arrested for DUI's and drug possesion. We already have lost Tommie Harris, and Mike Brown, now another DT at this rate our defense is going to have a really hard time stopping people.
  13. He wasn't horrible his first 2 years with the Cardinals. How do you explain 2006? He must have won every time he was even decent, because his RS was decidedly average. It's just kind of weird. Day games in 2006: 4.33ERA 1.27WHIP .246BAA Night games: 6.95ERA 1.66WHIP .312 BAA Wins: Apr 6: 5.1ip 2er Apr 12:6ip 3er Apr 17:8ip 1er May 13: 7ip 1er May 18: 7.2ip 3er May 23: 8.1 5er May 29: 7ip 1er June 4: 5ip 5er vs Cubs June 16:8ip 1er Jul 2: 7ip 4er Jul 7:7.2 2er Jul 23:8ip 0er Aug 18: 5ip 3er Aug 30:5ip 5er No wins in September but pitching 5 times he did have 3 quality starts in that month. Out of all those wins, 4 of them were not quality starts and that is to be expected. Even with his terrible ERA at least he did have a good amount of games where he was good to decent.
  14. That is so damn funny! Our GM is a really smart guy. I bet you Zito and Schmidt didn't have an offense like Marquis did either.
  15. People are wasting their time talking about this shortstop thing and Giles. The Cubs, whether you like it or not, are happy with Izturis and are not looking for a shortstop. They signed DeRosa for three years to be their second baseman. They are not going to sign Giles. I definitely don't like it even though what you are saying is true. It just goes to show you with all the money spent on this team we will be lucky to make the playoffs. isnt it ridiculous how much medicrity costs these days- a quarter of a billion for a third place team- Payroll jumping to 250 million!! Now we're really talking. Quarter Million spent this offseason, but I'm sure you knew that. I'm not a big fan of the "quarter billion spent this offseason" rhetoric. It distorts the truth. They didn't spend $250 million this offseason. They committed to spend that much over the next 8 years. And the way they backloaded the deals, they haven't spent nearly as much for this upcoming season as it seems. You know with all the back loaded contracts and big money we have to dish out in the future I wonder if they made a decision not to resign Z, and others after this year? Who knows, I hope not.
  16. Oh, we don't like it. You can rest assured on that. Why exactly is Hendry so enamored with him? That's what I don't understand. Izturis is just another in a long line of slick fielding/no hit SS's who come and go in this league, and are soon forgotten. I wasn't fond of his offensive output pre-injury. He's 2 years removed from that offensive output and may never match it again. The Cubs apparently feel they'll get enough offensive production from Soriano, Lee, Barrett, Ramirez and others that whatever Izturis gives them will be fine as long as he continues to play defense as he has in the past. Bruce, Any ideas about CF? Is Jones out of here? Are they looking to leave CF open for Pie? EDIT nevermind it was already answered.

  18. This is why we need to sign Giles for 2B and move DeRosa to SS.
  19. I'm still pretty pissed off that they stayed with Hawkins even though he just sucked as a closer. That team had one hell of a rotation and Prior was really coming on at the end of the year. Thanks Latroy/Dusty. I put the blame squarely on Baker for not making the change and being so thick headed about even trying to use another pitcher in that role. This is actually the time I started to sour on Hendry for not getting us a proven RP to take over the closer role when it was obvious to even monkeys a move had to be made. He finally tried to make a move when waivers were intact for jose mesa but obviously it got blocked.
  20. Did they get rid of him? He's still there. It was mentioned they could use Otsuka for trade bait to try and shore up the starting pitching.
  21. Who cares what DeRosa thinks. Move him to SS and sign Giles. That should improve our ball club.
  22. No old players please. Thanks. Church, Wilkerson, Rowand, and possibly clark are the options that are acceptable to me.
  23. I'm not totally sold on Jennings and the Astros gave up a lot for him. Here's hoping that his numbers inflate back to career norm.
