  1. Good job defense, although still no pressure on Eli.
  2. If Thomas Jones comes back out for the next series, I'm gonna hurl.
  3. Offensive line has been putrid and the defense is getting manhandled. It's going to be a long night if this keeps up.
  4. Some day, there is going to be an acadamic study correlating alcoholism with being a Cub fan. As if Harry Caray wasn't proof enough. As I see it, if the Cubs can sign Soriano to play second and J.D. Drew to play center, losing Aramis won't be such a hit. If they can do that, while finding an semi-adequate replacement at third and getting a couple of half-way decent starters, I will be happy. I don't think the above scenario is impossible given the Cubs' situation, financial framework, and current market . The ball is in your court Jimbo -- only you can prevent yourself from being tossed out on your ass.
  5. I always thought Spellman could have made a name for himself in the NFL if he had his head screwed on straight. He had all the talent in the world. Now that he is in the fight game, I wonder how he'd fair against the Fridge? Or former Chicago Bear washout (and steroid monster) Bob Sapp? Although my dislike for Hendry has reached intense levels, I take solace in the fact that he is likely gone once the Cubs are sold to rich owners who actually give a damn; are willing to do whatever it takes to win; and will not suffer incompetence from their unders. Or at least, against my better judgement, I foolishly hope.
  6. Look on the bright side, this just means more money for Hendry to spend this offseason. David Bell, Sarge Jr., Mark DeRosa...he's gonna be like a kid in a candy store.
  7. Why do I get the feeling that the difference between Hendry and Aramis/Kinzler was something like $2 million per. In other words, the cost of a Glendon Rusch. Screw you, Jimbo.
  8. Addendum: Texas picks up players off the scrap heap and they perform well (Gary Matthews Jr., Mark DeRosa, David Dellucci) in the American League's best hitters park. Why in the hell should the Cubs want any of them, other than to be 'ok' backups.
  9. Overpaying for minimal gains. I doubt he'd be better than Ryan Theriot. (PS: But does he hustle?)
  10. Len Kasper weighs in: If there is some kind of smear campaign, the biggest shill (lacky, mouthpiece, etc.) of them all* isn't buying into it. (*I'm joking by the way. Len for GM!)
  11. Offer him an incentive laden deal and put him in the bullpen. Otherwise, as much as it pains me (as I'm sure it does most Cub fans), let him go.
  12. Great game. It's been back and forth the entire second half. Edit: The Broncos have now given up more points than the Chicago Bears. Woo Hoo!
  13. Pretty much. He had a 53 yard gainer in the second half on a play in which the Bears looked like they were sleepwalking. Still, he's a good one.
  14. Just got back from watching this massacre at a nearby sports bar. Looking at the box score, one thing jumped out at me... T. Johnson...5 tackles, 2 forced fumbles Maybe they won't miss Mike Brown as much as we think.
  15. What's the deal with the accompanying picture in the ESPN link? http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/coaches/30025.jpg It looks as if Bochy was having an allergic reaction to a bee sting. Any chance Dusty goes to the Pads? He's a west coast kind of guy, afterall.
  16. If it were a corked bat or steroids, he'd be singing a different tune. When pitchers cheat, they're considered colorful.
  17. Reason one-zillion-eleventh of why I hate the Chicago sports media: Idiot example z~, Rick Morrisey: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/cs-061023morrissey,1,700566.column?coll=cs-home-utility Somebody explain to me why third baseman Aramis Ramirez will be such a hot commodity if the Cubs can't re-sign him. Did other teams happen to watch the first two months of the season? Did they watch him run out grounders all year? I've seen caddies pace off yardage faster. Yes, those first two months of the season erase 3½ years of excellence. And, if you speak media-ese, he has probably been the best Cub clutch hitter over that span. No, I cannot reason why other teams would want him. Oh, I forgot, the first two months of the season mean everything, August and September mean nothing. And the Cubs need more hustle types...like Neifi. Why am I writing one sentence paragraphs? And why is a hack like Rick Morrisey still employed by a major metropoltian newspaper (let alone by a company that owns the Chicago Cubs)?
  18. This reminds me, I was having terrible flashbacks to the Carolina playoff game watching Anquan Boldin carve up the defense. This is what concerns me about Ron Rivera. Even during that 13-3 win, Steve Smith had a monster game. You'd think that Lovie and Rivera would have learned from that and would have placed special emphisis on covering him. Instead, we repeatedly witnessed Peanut Tillman being hung out to dry as Steve Smith torched the Bear secondary. Listening to the Bear radio broadcast while watching the game, Tom Thayer pointed out several times how Boldin was being switched around at the line of scrimmage in order to gain favorable match-ups. Why wasn't the defense taking special care to cover him? I'm worried that there is a certain hubris with this Bear defense. I get the sense that they might be too stubborn to alter their gameplan to account for a singular outstanding wideout. While I might be (am probably) totally off base with my concerns, I continue to worry about how the Bears will handle top recievers.
  19. Watching these kids in the stands breaks my heart. Reminds me of the time I cried my eyes out as a young buck in '84.
  20. Conventional wisdom tells me that Loduca is clutch.
  21. Luck has maybe a little to do with it. They have just been a whole lot better than the Cubs for the better part of the last 10 years. I'm not disputing the fact that the Cards have been better than the Cubs. But they are lucky. Somehow, they have this keen ability to pick up pieces of crap and have them perform. And just to add insult to injury, they immediately go to that Tommy Lasorda/Cub fan in a tree commercial.
