  1. Pretty much anything an agent says is just a ploy to up the ante. My guess is that they want San Diego to get closer to Chicago's offering price and if it did come down to geography, San Diego wins. Yeah, that what it sounds like to me too. I hope Jenkins will have a career year with the Cubs in 08.
  2. A dominating pitching staff is key, but as the Padres proved last year, you still need some help from your offense. Proved how? The Rockies needed a 163rd game to beat them and get into the playoffs. Yeah I think the Cubs would have a very good team if they had a stud 1-5 staff even with the offensive team they have now.
  3. Honestly, how much better is Bedard over Hill?
  4. Good stuff...really. A friend of mine that was born in Taiwan loves it when people ask him if he knows karate. Keep the stereo type one liners coming guys, they're really funny.
  5. Yep. He is what he is and it's up to the Cubs to improve the talent at that position.
  6. Why would he come back early to possibly hurt his future career earnings? My guess is that he rehabs all year and is targeting 2009 as his comeback year.
  7. Minnesota's offense is not their problem. Ive respected their offense, its not to pass happy or run happy. They've had years where they just light people up on offense. That's what I thought and it sounds good...thank you. I wasn't too happy with White but I have a feeling Robinson put him in a no win situation.
  8. Syracuse just hired Mitch Browning an ex-Gopher OC to coach our Offense after firing another ex-Big 10 flunky Brian White. Does anyone have any info on this guy?
  9. I'm just trying to think how the Twins got Santana...hmmm, let me think. I'm just trying to remember if every Rule 5 pitcher ever drafted ended up being equal to or closely equal to Santana in skill. Maybe not but Hamilton seemed to work out nicely as well. :-"
  10. I know you're speaking of SS. But I don't agree with you on CF and RF. RF for one, we have Murton. Who could have a decent year but he will not be Fukudome good. KFUKU has very good defense on top of better offense. CF you have Pie. And Pie is no guarantee to be anything. So if they do get Figgins I think it's a huge upgrade. 2B is the only one I can agree with you on. I was on Derosa's side ever since I heard of the trade. I'd like him to be our 2B. But if Roberts can put up Derosa #'s + 50 SB I'm still happy with that. So we'll have a somewhat black hole in SS (BTW, it's still much better than it has been in a few years). If we get FUKU, FIG, and ROB I think that's going to be a very good offense. Not only that, maybe we can finally get some stability in the line-up. Figgins could be a huge upgrade or a marginal one. His stats this year were great, but his OBP was fueled by his high BA. It really doesn't look like much changed except more of his hits fell in. If he settles back around a .300 average, which is likely his upgrade will look marginal for the cost. Does anyone know what his linedrive % and his pitches per AB? http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1580&position=3B Thanks! 4.0 pitches per AB, how does that compare to the average?
  11. then what is it? Ha...you goof! It took me a second read of that to get it!
  12. That's not a bad price for a mini clinic. I wonder what he's teaching?

  14. Apparently he's getting divorced. Didn't he just get married?
  15. Doesn't this basically guarantee the Roberts trade will go down sometime soon? Pauly ain't been the same since Sonny hit him in the head with a garbage can so who really knows.
  16. Pirates. \:D/ I'm sure he'll sign with a Major League team instead. :D
  17. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/playerSplits?categoryId=388087 Thanks! He reminds me of a Mark Grace type hitter. Ethier is a decent player, but his K/BB ratio is not comparable to Grace's and that was Mark's defining characteristic in my opinion. In his prime or when he first started?
  18. $11M signing bonus $5M at signing 1/05, $2M 6/15/05, $2M 1/15/06, $2M 1/15/07 05:$10M, 06:$12M, 07:$12M, 08:$18.5M, 09:$18.5M, 10:$18.5M, 11:$18.5M $0.1M bonus each for All Star, Gold Glove or Silver Slugger $0.2M bonus for 4th-place finish in 2006 NL MVP vote $22M deferred to 2012-18 8 annual installments of $3,142,857 @ 1.7175% interest $8.5M deferred annually from 2008-2011 As for his performance, it sounds like he's at least as good if not better than Beltran defensively, and if it so happens that he hits as well here as he did in Japan, he'll compare very favorably offensively. Thanks BCV! I'd love to see him be at that level as I always wanted Hendry to sign Beltran. This might be a very good thing.
  19. I'm just trying to think how the Twins got Santana...hmmm, let me think.
  20. I disagree. Unless the Cubs win the WS they can play the "Bring us to the next level" card. I can't see the fans revolting over Hendry getting fired. Nor do I see the press having much of a reaction since the new owner would simply be bringing in his own guy. I understand what you're saying, however, if the Cubs go out and win 95 games next year, there's going to be a significant amount of pressure to keep Hendry. My point is Hendry needs to go big to save his job. He probably can't just win 86 games and expect to be kept around. So why not go balls out. It does him no good to keep the farm system stocked for 2010, when there's no guarantee he has a job in 2009. Then he better get some impact players and not light hitting speedy dudes. If they are guys that can get on base, fine, but I just see a 280/310 fast type guy in our Cub future.
  21. Unlike Michigan I think a lot of coaches have learned they can open up the run by passing or just keep passing until it's stopped. Coach P did that here, a firm believer in "establishing the run".
  22. :( :( Sorry raisin. Our one GT fan will be happy though. GREAT hire for Georgia Tech. Best since O'Leary.
  23. True and that might be a very nice spot for him. Imagine the irony if Hendry is fired and Littlefield takes his place.
  24. :( :( Sorry raisin. Our one GT fan will be happy though.
